About This Presentation

Description : Common Types of Pediatric Cancers: Understanding Childhood Cancer
Pediatric cancers, while rare, are a significant cause of illness in children worldwide. This presentation, “Common Types of Pediatric Cancers,” provides an in-depth look at the most frequently diagnosed cancers in children, including their symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment options.
The presentation covers leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, detailing its types such as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). It also explores brain and central nervous system tumors, such as medulloblastomas and gliomas, which are the second most common group of pediatric cancers. Other cancers discussed include neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor (kidney cancer), lymphomas (Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s), and bone cancers like osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma.
Through visual aids and structured content, the presentation highlights the importance of early diagnosis and multimodal treatments such as chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. This resource is designed for both healthcare professionals and those interested in understanding pediatric oncology.
By increasing awareness and knowledge about these conditions, this presentation aims to improve early detection and outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer.
Take a closer look at these vital insights into childhood cancers today.

Common Types of Pediatric Cancers Understanding Cancers in Children: Key Insights for Diagnosis and Treatment Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Introduction to Pediatric Cancers Pediatric cancers are rare but account for a significant number of childhood illnesses. Around 300,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer annually. Common pediatric cancers differ significantly from adult cancers in terms of type, biology, and treatment. Reference: World Health Organization (WHO). (2021). Childhood cancer fact sheet.

Leukemia Types: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL): Most common. Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Symptoms: Fatigue, fever, bruising, frequent infections. Diagnosis: Blood tests, bone marrow biopsy. Treatment: Chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation (in some cases). Reference: American Cancer Society (ACS). (2021). Leukemia in children.

Brain and CNS Tumors Common Types: Medulloblastoma: Most common malignant brain tumor. Gliomas: Including astrocytomas. Ependymomas: Tumors of the brain's lining. Symptoms: Headaches, seizures, vision problems, vomiting. Diagnosis: MRI or CT scan, biopsy. Treatment: Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy. Reference: Ostrom, Q. T., et al. (2021). CBTRUS statistical report: Primary brain and other CNS tumors diagnosed in the US. Neuro-Oncology.

Neuroblastoma Description: Cancer arising from immature nerve cells, typically in the adrenal glands or along the spine. Symptoms: Abdominal swelling, bone pain, weight loss. Age Group: Common in children under 5 years. Diagnosis: Imaging tests, MIBG scan, biopsy. Treatment: Chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, immunotherapy. Reference: Maris, J. M. (2010). Recent advances in neuroblastoma. New England Journal of Medicine.

Wilms Tumor (Nephroblastoma) Description: Cancer of the kidneys; most common in children aged 3–4. Symptoms: Abdominal swelling, blood in urine, fever. Diagnosis: Ultrasound, CT/MRI scan, biopsy. Treatment: Surgery (nephrectomy), chemotherapy, radiation. Reference: Davidoff, A. M. (2009). Wilms tumor. Current Opinion in Pediatrics.
Slide 7-

Lymphomas Hodgkin Lymphoma: Symptoms: Enlarged lymph nodes, night sweats, weight loss. Diagnosis: Lymph node biopsy, PET scan. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: More aggressive; often affects the chest or abdomen. Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation. Reference: Sandlund, J. T., et al. (2004). Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in children. The New England Journal of Medicine.

Bone Cancers Osteosarcoma: Most common bone cancer in children. Affects long bones (e.g., femur). Symptoms: Bone pain, swelling. Ewing Sarcoma: Affects bones and soft tissues. Common in pelvis, chest wall. Diagnosis: X-ray, biopsy, genetic testing. Treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation Reference: Bielack, S. S., et al. (2002). Prognostic factors in high-grade osteosarcoma. Cancer.
Slide 9-

Retinoblastoma Description: Cancer of the retina, typically diagnosed in children under 3 years. Symptoms: White reflection in the pupil (leukocoria), vision loss, eye swelling. Diagnosis: Eye exam, imaging, genetic testing. Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation, cryotherapy, enucleation (severe cases). Reference: Shields, C. L., & Shields, J. A. (2004). Retinoblastoma management: Advances and future challenges. Clinical Ophthalmology.
Slide 10-

Rhabdomyosarcoma Description: Cancer of skeletal muscle tissues; common in head, neck, and genitourinary tract. Symptoms: Lump or swelling, pain, bleeding. Diagnosis: Imaging, biopsy. Treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy. Reference: Pizzo, P. A., & Poplack, D. G. (2015). Principles and Practice of Pediatric Oncology.
