About This Presentation

Description : Radiation Therapy in Gynecologic Oncology: A Comprehensive Guide
Radiation therapy plays a critical role in the treatment of gynecologic cancers, such as cervical, endometrial, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. This presentation, “Radiation Therapy in Gynecologic Oncology,” explores its techniques, applications, and recent advancements.
The session covers key methods like External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) and brachytherapy (internal radiation), which are widely used for treating localized gynecologic cancers. Techniques like Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) have improved precision, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
Attendees will learn about the indications for radiation therapy, including its use as a primary treatment, in combination with chemotherapy, or as an adjuvant therapy after surgery. The presentation also delves into the management of side effects, such as fatigue, skin irritation, and long-term complications like fibrosis or vaginal stenosis.
Advances in technologies, including proton therapy and 3D brachytherapy, have revolutionized the field, improving patient outcomes while minimizing side effects. Real-world case studies are included to demonstrate the clinical success of radiation therapy in gynecologic oncology.
Join us to understand how radiation therapy continues to provide hope and innovation in the fight against gynecologic cancers.

Radiation Therapy in Gynecologic Oncology Principles, Applications, and Advancements Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist

What is Radiation Therapy? A cancer treatment that uses high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells. Used as primary treatment or combined with surgery and chemotherapy in gynecologic cancers. Goal: Maximize tumor destruction while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Speaker Notes: Radiation therapy plays a crucial role in managing gynecologic cancers, particularly for cervical, vaginal, and endometrial cancers. Reference: American Cancer Society (ACS). (2021). Radiation Therapy Overview.

Types of Radiation Therapy in Gynecologic Oncology External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT): Delivers radiation from outside the body. Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation): Radioactive sources placed close to or inside the tumor. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT): Highly precise radiation for localized cancers. Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): Adjusts radiation beams to target tumors more precisely. Speaker Notes: Different techniques are chosen based on the type and stage of cancer, with brachytherapy being particularly effective in gynecologic cancers. Reference: National Cancer Institute (NCI). (2020). Radiation Therapy for Cancer.

When is Radiation Therapy Used in Gynecologic Oncology? Cervical Cancer: Standard treatment for advanced stages. Combined with chemotherapy (chemoradiation). Endometrial Cancer: Adjuvant therapy for high-risk cases. Treatment for inoperable tumors. Vaginal and Vulvar Cancer: Primary or adjuvant therapy. For recurrent or metastatic disease. Speaker Notes: Radiation is essential for managing cervical cancer and is often combined with chemotherapy for improved outcomes. Reference: Small, W., et al. (2017). Cervical cancer treatment guidelines. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

How Radiation Therapy Works Uses high-energy X-rays, gamma rays, or particles to damage DNA in cancer cells. Prevents cancer cells from growing and dividing. Healthy cells can repair themselves better than cancer cells. Speaker Notes: Radiation exploits the inability of cancer cells to repair DNA damage, making it an effective treatment modality. Reference: Hall, E. J., & Giaccia, A. J. (2018). Radiobiology for the Radiologist.

Planning Radiation Therapy Simulation: CT or MRI imaging to map the treatment area. Dosimetry: Calculating the exact dose to maximize tumor control and minimize side effects. Custom Shielding: Protects surrounding healthy organs. Speaker Notes: Radiation planning is critical in gynecologic oncology due to the proximity of sensitive structures like the bladder and rectum. Reference: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). (2020). Radiation oncology in practice.

Brachytherapy in Gynecologic Oncology A key modality for cervical, vaginal, and endometrial cancers. Delivers high-dose radiation directly to the tumor site. Types: Intracavitary Brachytherapy: For cervical and endometrial cancers. Interstitial Brachytherapy: For advanced or recurrent cancers. Speaker Notes: Brachytherapy is particularly effective for localized control, often used in combination with EBRT. Reference: Tanderup, K., et al. (2014). Brachytherapy for cervical cancer: Guidelines and techniques. Radiotherapy and Oncology.

Side Effects of Radiation Therapy Acute Side Effects: Fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, skin irritation. Cystitis (bladder inflammation), proctitis (rectal inflammation). Chronic Side Effects: Vaginal stenosis, fibrosis, bowel obstruction. Lymphedema in vulvar cancer patients. Speaker Notes: While radiation therapy is effective, managing side effects is essential to ensure patient quality of life. Reference: Bentzen, S. M., et al. (2010). Late effects of radiation therapy. International Journal of Radiation Oncology.

Advances in Radiation Therapy Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): Real-time imaging for precise delivery. Proton Therapy: Minimal damage to surrounding tissues. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Enhancing treatment planning and dose optimization. 3D Brachytherapy: Better dose distribution and patient outcomes. Speaker Notes: Technological advancements are improving precision, reducing side effects, and enhancing treatment outcomes. Reference: McDonald, M. W., et al. (2017). Advances in radiation oncology technologies.

Clinical Success Stories Case 1: Cervical cancer patient treated with chemoradiation and brachytherapy. Case 2: Endometrial cancer patient with inoperable tumor managed with EBRT. Outcomes: Tumor control, improved survival, and quality of life. Speaker Notes: Real-world examples demonstrate the effectiveness of radiation therapy in gynecologic oncology. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). (2021). Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.
