About This Presentation

Description : Melanoma: Insights into Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Melanoma, the most aggressive type of skin cancer, originates in melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of the skin. Though it accounts for only 1% of all skin cancers, it causes the majority of skin cancer-related deaths, making early detection and prevention critical.
This presentation covers melanoma-specific topics, starting with its risk factors such as genetic predisposition (e.g., BRCA mutations), UV exposure, and fair skin types. The ABCDE rule (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving) is highlighted as a practical tool for early detection.
Key advancements in melanoma treatment include immunotherapy (e.g., checkpoint inhibitors like nivolumab) and targeted therapy (e.g., BRAF and MEK inhibitors) for advanced cases. Staging methods like sentinel lymph node biopsies and imaging play a crucial role in determining prognosis and guiding treatment plans.
Prevention strategies focus on sun safety, regular skin checks, and avoiding tanning beds. By empowering individuals with knowledge about melanoma risk factors and the importance of early action, this presentation emphasizes the power of awareness in reducing the burden of this deadly disease.
Explore how modern medicine, combined with proactive measures, can save lives and improve outcomes in melanoma care.

Skin Cancer - Melanoma-Specific Topics Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist Understanding Melanoma: Risk Factors, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Slide 2-

Introduction to Melanoma Melanoma originates in melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells. Accounts for only 1% of skin cancer cases but causes the majority of skin cancer deaths. Early detection significantly improves survival rates. Speaker's Note: While rare compared to other skin cancers, melanoma's potential for metastasis makes it a critical topic in dermatologic oncology. Reference: National Cancer Institute. Melanoma Basics.

Risk Factors for Melanoma Genetic Factors: Family history of melanoma. Mutations in genes like CDKN2A and BRAF. Environmental Factors: UV radiation from sun or tanning beds. History of sunburns, especially in childhood. Personal Factors: Fair skin, light eyes, and red or blond hair. Presence of many moles or atypical nevi. Speaker's Note: Understanding risk factors is vital for targeted screening and early interventions in high-risk populations. Reference: Skin Cancer Foundation. Melanoma Risk Factors.
Slide 4-

The ABCDEs of Melanoma A: Asymmetry B: Border irregularity C: Color variation D: Diameter >6 mm E: Evolving shape, size, or color Speaker's Note: The ABCDE rule is a simple yet powerful tool to help both patients and clinicians identify suspicious moles early. Reference: American Academy of Dermatology. ABCDEs of Melanoma Detection.
Slide 5-

Melanoma Staging and Its Impact Stage 0 (In situ): Confined to the epidermis. Stage I-II: Localized; may involve thickness and ulceration. Stage III: Spread to regional lymph nodes. Stage IV: Distant metastases. Prognosis decreases significantly with advanced stages. Speaker's Note: Staging is critical for determining prognosis and selecting appropriate treatments. Reference: AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, 8th Edition.
Slide 6-

How is Melanoma Diagnosed? Clinical Examination: Visual and dermoscopic evaluation. Biopsy: Excisional biopsy is the gold standard. Sentinel lymph node biopsy for staging. Imaging and Blood Tests: For advanced cases. Speaker's Note: Accurate and early diagnosis involves a combination of clinical evaluation and histopathological confirmation. Reference: Melanoma Research Foundation. Diagnostic Pathways.
Slide 7-

Advances in Melanoma Treatment Surgical Management: Wide local excision for early-stage melanoma. Lymph node dissection if required. Immunotherapy: Checkpoint inhibitors (e.g., pembrolizumab, nivolumab). Targeted Therapy: BRAF and MEK inhibitors for BRAF-mutant melanoma. Radiation and Chemotherapy: For advanced or metastatic cases. Emerging Therapies: Oncolytic virus therapy and personalized vaccines. Speaker's Note: Melanoma treatment has advanced rapidly, with immunotherapy and targeted therapy revolutionizing outcomes for patients. Reference: Journal of Clinical Oncology. Advances in Melanoma Therapy.

Reducing the Risk of Melanoma Avoid excessive UV exposure and tanning beds. Regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Wear protective clothing and sunglasses. Perform monthly self-skin checks and annual dermatologist visits. Speaker's Note: Preventing melanoma starts with sun safety and regular skin checks, empowering individuals to take control of their skin health. Reference: World Health Organization (WHO). Sun Protection Guidelines.

Conclusions - Melanoma Awareness Saves Lives Early detection is key to improving outcomes. Advances in diagnosis and treatment have significantly improved survival rates. Prevention through education and proactive measures remains critical. Speaker's Note: Melanoma may be aggressive, but awareness and early action can make all the difference. Prevention is our strongest ally. Reference: American Cancer Society. Melanoma Prevention and Awareness.
