About This Presentation

Description : Site-Specific Surgical Oncology: Advancing Precision in Cancer Surgery
Site-specific surgical oncology focuses on the surgical treatment of cancer, tailored to specific organs and tissues. This presentation explores the precision and advancements in surgical techniques used to manage various cancers, emphasizing the critical role of surgery in a multidisciplinary oncology care approach.
From breast-conserving surgeries like lumpectomies to complex procedures like the Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer, site-specific approaches ensure targeted and effective cancer management. Techniques such as robotic-assisted and minimally invasive surgeries have revolutionized surgical oncology, offering patients reduced recovery times, minimal scarring, and improved outcomes.
Key topics covered include surgeries for breast, lung, colorectal, gynecological, liver, and head and neck cancers, alongside the importance of lymph node dissections, reconstructive procedures, and palliative interventions in advanced cases. The presentation highlights the importance of collaboration between surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists for optimal treatment plans tailored to each patient.
Whether it’s preserving organ function, improving quality of life, or enhancing survival rates, site-specific surgical oncology remains at the forefront of cancer care innovation. Join us to explore these cutting-edge techniques and their transformative impact on cancer treatment.
Learn how precision-driven surgical oncology is shaping the future of cancer care.

Slide 2-

What is Site-Specific Surgical Oncology? Surgical oncology focuses on the surgical management of cancer in specific organs and tissues. A multidisciplinary approach combines surgery with medical and radiation oncology for optimal outcomes. Site-specific surgical oncology ensures expertise tailored to the unique challenges of each organ system. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Surgical treatment of cancer: Overview.
Slide 3-

Breast Surgical Oncology Common Procedures: Lumpectomy: Breast-conserving surgery. Mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast. Sentinel lymph node biopsy to assess the spread. Oncoplastic surgery for improved aesthetics. Reference: Fisher, B., et al. (2002). Twenty-year follow-up of a randomized clinical trial comparing total mastectomy and lumpectomy in breast cancer treatment. NEJM.
Slide 4-

Lung Surgical Oncology Surgical Techniques: Lobectomy (removal of a lung lobe). Pneumonectomy (removal of an entire lung). Segmentectomy for early-stage lung cancer. Use of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) and robotic techniques for minimally invasive procedures. Reference: Detterbeck, F. C., et al. (2017). Management of early-stage lung cancer. Chest.
Slide 5-

Colorectal Surgical Oncology Surgical Options: Colectomy: Removal of part or all of the colon. Proctectomy: Surgery for rectal cancer. Sphincter-saving surgeries for rectal cancer. Role of minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Reference: Meyerhardt, J. A., et al. (2007). Colorectal cancer: Surgical approaches and outcomes. JCO.
Slide 6-

Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Common Procedures: Resection of tumors in the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Neck dissection for lymph node metastases. Reconstruction techniques using skin grafts and flaps. Reference: Haddad, R. I., et al. (2020). Advances in head and neck oncology. The Lancet.
Slide 7-

Liver and Pancreatic Surgical Oncology Liver Surgery: Hepatectomy for primary liver tumors or metastases. Minimally invasive liver resections. Pancreatic Surgery: Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy) for pancreatic head cancer. Distal pancreatectomy for tail lesions. Reference: Keane, M. G., et al. (2019). Liver and pancreatic cancer surgery: Challenges and advancements. JAMA Surgery.
Slide 8-

Gynecological Surgical Oncology Common Procedures: Hysterectomy for uterine or cervical cancers. Oophorectomy for ovarian cancer. Debulking surgery for advanced ovarian cancer. Use of robotic and laparoscopic techniques. Reference: du Bois, A., et al. (2010). Optimal surgical cytoreduction in advanced ovarian cancer. Cancer.
Slide 9-

Skin and Soft Tissue Surgical Oncology Skin Cancer: Mohs surgery for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Wide local excision for melanoma. Soft Tissue Sarcoma: Limb-sparing surgeries with reconstructive techniques. Reference: American Academy of Dermatology. (2020). Mohs surgery: Guidelines and benefits.
Slide 10-

Urologic Surgical Oncology Prostate Cancer: Radical prostatectomy. Kidney Cancer: Partial or total nephrectomy. Bladder Cancer: Cystectomy with urinary diversion techniques. Reference: EAU Guidelines. (2021). Urological oncology: Surgical management recommendations.
Slide 11-

Minimally Invasive Techniques Robotic-assisted surgery (e.g., da Vinci robotic system). Laparoscopic techniques for precise tumor removal. Benefits: Reduced recovery time, smaller incisions, and lower risk of complications. Reference: Intuitive Surgical. (2020). Robotic-assisted surgery in oncology: Outcomes and benefits.
Slide 12-

Palliative Surgical Oncology Surgery to alleviate symptoms in advanced cancers: Relieving bowel obstruction. Spinal decompression for metastatic disease. Stent placement for esophageal or biliary obstruction. Reference: Doyle, D. (2004). Palliative surgery: Principles and practice. Oxford University Press.
