About This Presentation

Description : Multimodal Therapy in Surgical Oncology: A Collaborative Approach to Cancer Treatment
Multimodal therapy in surgical oncology represents a comprehensive approach to cancer care, combining surgery with additional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. This integration addresses both localized tumors and systemic disease, improving survival rates and quality of life for patients.
This presentation, "Multimodal Therapy in Surgical Oncology," delves into the rationale and components of this collaborative approach. It highlights how neoadjuvant therapies, such as pre-surgical chemotherapy and radiation, help shrink tumors, making them easier to remove surgically. Similarly, adjuvant therapies after surgery eliminate residual cancer cells, reducing the risk of recurrence.
The presentation also explores the role of modern advancements like targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and precision medicine in surgical oncology. By tailoring treatments to specific cancer types, these innovations optimize outcomes for patients with complex malignancies like colorectal, breast, and lung cancer.
In addition to its benefits, the presentation addresses challenges, such as treatment-related toxicities, coordination among modalities, and accessibility in resource-limited settings.
This presentation is ideal for healthcare professionals, students, and anyone interested in understanding how multimodal therapy is transforming cancer care. Learn how collaboration and innovation are shaping the future of oncology.

Multimodal Therapy in Surgical Oncology A Collaborative Approach to Optimizing Cancer Treatment Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Multimodal Therapy? Definition: Multimodal therapy combines surgery with other treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy to improve cancer outcomes. Goal: Enhance survival rates, reduce recurrence, and improve quality of life. Importance: Many cancers require a multidisciplinary approach for effective treatment. Speaker Notes: Highlight that modern cancer care relies on integrating multiple therapeutic approaches to address both local and systemic disease. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines, 2023.
Slide 3-

Why Multimodal Therapy? Cancers are often heterogeneous and involve both local and systemic spread. Surgery alone may not address microscopic residual disease or distant metastases. Combining therapies enhances tumor control and reduces recurrence risk. Reference: Guckenberger, M., et al. (2020). Multimodal cancer treatment: Impact of technology and science on outcome. The Lancet.
Slide 4-

Key Components of Multimodal Therapy Surgery: Primary modality for tumor removal. Radiation Therapy: Reduces tumor size pre-surgery or eliminates residual cancer cells post-surgery. Systemic Therapy: Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy to treat micrometastases. Palliative Care: Symptom management and quality of life enhancement. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Understanding cancer treatments: Multimodal approaches.
Slide 5-

Neoadjuvant Therapy in Multimodal Care Definition: Pre-surgical treatments (e.g., chemotherapy or radiation). Objectives: Shrink tumors to facilitate surgical resection. Assess tumor responsiveness to therapy. Improve resectability in borderline cases. Example: Neoadjuvant chemo for rectal or esophageal cancer. Speaker Notes: Neoadjuvant therapy plays a critical role in downstaging tumors, especially in locally advanced cases. Reference: Fiteni, F., et al. (2015). Neoadjuvant therapy in cancer: From concepts to outcomes. Current Oncology.
Slide 6-

Adjuvant Therapy Definition: Post-surgical treatments to eliminate residual cancer cells. Benefits: Reduces risk of recurrence. Improves overall survival. Examples: Chemotherapy for breast cancer after lumpectomy. Radiation therapy for head and neck cancers post-surgery. Reference: Early Breast Cancer Trialists’ Collaborative Group (EBCTCG). (2018). Adjuvant chemotherapy in early-stage breast cancer. The Lancet.
Slide 7-

Integration with Targeted Therapy Mechanism: Targets specific cancer mutations or proteins. Examples: HER2-targeted therapy (trastuzumab) in HER2-positive breast cancer. EGFR inhibitors in lung cancer. Combined with surgery to address systemic disease. Reference: Drilon, A., et al. (2018). Targeted therapies in oncology: Evolving landscape. Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.
Slide 8-

Immunotherapy in Surgical Oncology Mechanism: Boosts immune system to attack cancer cells. Examples: Checkpoint inhibitors (e.g., pembrolizumab, nivolumab) in melanoma. Combined with surgery to reduce metastatic burden. Advantages: Long-lasting immune response. Synergistic effect with surgery and radiation. Reference: Sharma, P., & Allison, J. P. (2015). Immune checkpoint therapy in cancer. Science.

Multimodal Therapy in Specific Cancers Breast Cancer: Surgery + adjuvant chemo + radiation. Colorectal Cancer: Neoadjuvant chemoradiation + surgery. Lung Cancer: Surgery + targeted therapy + immunotherapy. Head and Neck Cancer: Surgery + concurrent chemoradiation. Reference: NCCN Guidelines, 2023.
Slide 10-

Challenges in Multimodal Therapy Complex coordination between modalities. Increased treatment-related toxicities. Financial burden for patients. Limited access in resource-poor settings. Speaker Notes: While multimodal therapy improves outcomes, it requires a multidisciplinary team and can pose challenges like treatment toxicity and cost. Reference: Ferlito, A., et al. (2014). Multidisciplinary treatment of head and neck cancer: Challenges and benefits. The Oncologist.

Advances in Multimodal Therapy Integration of AI in treatment planning. Advances in intraoperative imaging for precision surgery. Personalized medicine using molecular profiling. Enhanced recovery protocols post-surgery. Reference: Deist, T. M., et al. (2018). Artificial intelligence in oncology: Current applications and future perspectives. The Lancet Oncology.
Slide 12-

Case Study Patient with locally advanced rectal cancer. Treatment Plan: Neoadjuvant chemoradiation. Surgical resection. Adjuvant chemotherapy. Outcome: Significant improvement in survival and quality of life. Reference: Sauer, R., et al. (2004). Preoperative vs. postoperative chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer. New England Journal of Medicine.
Slide 13-

Conclusion Multimodal therapy is essential for optimal cancer care. Integration of surgery with systemic and radiation therapies improves outcomes. Collaboration and innovation are key to advancing treatment strategies.
