About This Presentation

Description : Medical Oncology: Targeted Therapy - Revolutionizing Cancer Treatment
Targeted therapy is a breakthrough in the field of medical oncology, offering precision and personalized treatment options for cancer patients. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which affects both cancerous and healthy cells, targeted therapy focuses specifically on the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer growth and progression. This approach results in improved efficacy and fewer side effects.
The presentation, “Medical Oncology: Targeted Therapy,” provides a comprehensive overview of this innovative treatment modality. It explores the different types of targeted therapy, including monoclonal antibodies (e.g., trastuzumab for HER2-positive breast cancer), small molecule inhibitors (e.g., imatinib for chronic myeloid leukemia), and angiogenesis inhibitors (e.g., bevacizumab for colorectal cancer). You’ll learn about their mechanisms of action, indications, and the challenges faced, such as tumor resistance and high treatment costs.
Additionally, the presentation delves into future trends in targeted therapy, including the integration of AI for predictive modeling, combination therapies, and advancements in gene editing technologies. Targeted therapy is not only transforming cancer care but also paving the way for precision medicine across various medical fields.
This is an essential resource for healthcare professionals, students, and researchers looking to expand their knowledge of cutting-edge cancer treatments.

Medical Oncology - Targeted Therapy Revolutionizing Cancer Treatment Through Precision Medicine Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Targeted Therapy? Targeted therapy is a form of cancer treatment that uses drugs to specifically target molecules involved in cancer growth and progression. Unlike chemotherapy, targeted therapy affects cancer cells with minimal damage to normal cells. Examples of molecular targets: Proteins, growth factors, or mutated genes. Speaker Notes: Targeted therapy represents a significant advancement in oncology, focusing on the unique molecular profile of tumors to disrupt cancer growth more precisely. Reference: American Cancer Society (ACS). “What is Targeted Therapy?” (2020).
Slide 3-

How Targeted Therapy Works Blocks signals that cancer cells use to grow and divide. Stops the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis) to tumors. Promotes the immune system to destroy cancer cells. Delivers toxic substances directly to cancer cells. Speaker Notes: Targeted therapies aim to disrupt specific pathways essential for cancer cell survival while sparing normal cells, making them more precise and less toxic than traditional treatments. Reference: Mendelsohn, J., et al. (2015). The Molecular Basis of Targeted Therapy in Cancer Treatment.

Types of Targeted Therapy Monoclonal Antibodies (mAbs): Block specific proteins on the surface of cancer cells. Example: Trastuzumab (Herceptin) for HER2-positive breast cancer. Small Molecule Inhibitors: Penetrate cells to block enzymes or proteins. Example: Imatinib (Gleevec) for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Angiogenesis Inhibitors: Block blood vessel formation to tumors. Example: Bevacizumab (Avastin) for colorectal cancer. Speaker Notes: These therapies target specific molecules at different levels, from blocking receptors outside cells to targeting proteins inside. Reference: National Cancer Institute (NCI). “Types of Targeted Therapy.” (2021).

Indications for Targeted Therapy Cancers with Specific Mutations: HER2-positive breast cancer. EGFR-mutated lung cancer. BCR-ABL-positive leukemia. Advanced or Metastatic Cancers: Targeted therapy helps to manage and extend survival. Adjuvant or Maintenance Therapy: Prevents recurrence or progression of cancer. Speaker Notes: Targeted therapy is often personalized, guided by genetic or molecular tests to determine whether the tumor has a targetable mutation. Reference: Dienstmann, R., et al. (2018). “Precision Medicine in Oncology.” Cancer Discovery.
Slide 6-

Common Targeted Drugs HER2 Inhibitors: Trastuzumab (Herceptin) - Breast and gastric cancers. EGFR Inhibitors: Erlotinib (Tarceva) - Non-small cell lung cancer. VEGF Inhibitors: Bevacizumab (Avastin) - Colorectal and ovarian cancers. BCR-ABL Inhibitors: Imatinib (Gleevec) - Chronic myeloid leukemia. Speaker Notes: Each drug targets a specific pathway or molecule, offering a tailored approach to cancer treatment. Reference: European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). “Targeted Cancer Therapies” (2021).
Slide 7-

Advantages of Targeted Therapy Greater precision in treating cancer. Fewer side effects compared to chemotherapy. Effective against cancers resistant to traditional therapies. Enhances patient quality of life. Speaker Notes: The precision of targeted therapy significantly reduces off-target effects, which are common in traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy. Reference: Hanahan, D., et al. (2011). Hallmarks of Cancer: The Next Generation. Cell.
Slide 8-

Challenges of Targeted Therapy High cost of therapy. Tumor heterogeneity leading to resistance. Requires extensive genetic testing. Side effects: Rash, fatigue, diarrhea, etc. Speaker Notes: While targeted therapy has transformed cancer treatment, challenges such as resistance and accessibility remain. Reference: Longley, D. B., & Johnston, P. G. (2005). “Molecular Mechanisms of Drug Resistance.” Nature Reviews Cancer.
Slide 9-

Future of Targeted Therapy Development of combination therapies (e.g., immunotherapy + targeted therapy). New biomarkers to expand patient eligibility. Use of AI to predict treatment response. Advances in gene editing (CRISPR) to create new targets. Speaker Notes: The future of targeted therapy is bright, with ongoing innovations aimed at overcoming resistance and expanding its use to a broader patient population. Reference: Ribas, A., & Wolchok, J. D. (2018). “Cancer Immunotherapy Using Checkpoint Blockade.” Science.

Key Takeaways Targeted therapy represents a personalized and precise approach to cancer treatment. While challenges exist, advancements continue to improve outcomes for patients. The integration of targeted therapy with other treatments marks a new era in oncology. Speaker Notes: Targeted therapy has redefined how we approach cancer treatment, offering hope for better outcomes and fewer side effects for patients worldwide.
