Psychosocial Aspects in Medical Oncology Addressing the Emotional, Social, and Psychological Needs of Cancer Patients Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Importance of Psychosocial Care in Medical Oncology Cancer is not just a physical disease; it profoundly impacts emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Psychosocial care enhances patient outcomes, quality of life, and treatment adherence. A holistic approach that integrates medical and psychosocial support is essential in oncology. Speaker Notes: Cancer affects more than the body. Emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and fear of death are common. Addressing psychosocial needs is vital to providing holistic care. Emotional Challenges in Cancer Patients Anxiety and fear (e.g., fear of treatment, recurrence, death). Depression and feelings of hopelessness. Guilt or self-blame (e.g., about lifestyle factors contributing to cancer). Emotional distress due to treatment side effects (e.g., fatigue, hair loss). Speaker Notes: Many cancer patients experience emotional distress, especially after a diagnosis. These feelings can interfere with decision-making and treatment adherence if left unaddressed. Reference: Mitchell, A. J., Chan, M., Bhatti, H., Halton, M., Grassi, L., & Johansen, C. (2011). Social Challenges in Cancer Care Strain on relationships with family and friends. Social stigma and isolation, particularly with visible symptoms (e.g., hair loss, surgery scars). Financial stress from treatment costs, leading to added emotional burden. Changes in roles within the family and workplace. Speaker Notes: Cancer often affects not only the patient but also their family and social relationships. Financial strain and changes in roles are significant challenges that need attention. Psychological Challenges Adjustment disorders during different phases (diagnosis, treatment, survivorship). Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in some cancer survivors. Cognitive impairment ("chemo brain") affecting memory and concentration. Existential concerns about mortality and purpose in life. Speaker Notes: The psychological effects of cancer go beyond emotional reactions. Survivors may experience PTSD, and many face existential questions about life and death. Reference: Burgess, C., Cornelius, V., Love, S., Graham, J., Richards, M., & Ramirez, A. (2005). Depression and anxiety in women with early breast cancer: Five-year observational cohort study. Importance of Psychosocial Interventions Reduces emotional distress and improves coping mechanisms. Enhances patient-provider communication. Improves treatment adherence and quality of life. Promotes resilience and psychological well-being. Speaker Notes: Psychosocial support is integral to oncology care, helping patients navigate the emotional, psychological, and practical challenges of cancer treatment. Reference: Andersen, B. L., Thornton, L. M., Shapiro, C. L., Farrar, W. B., Mundy, B. L., Yang, H. C., & Carson, W. E. (2008). Effective Counseling Strategies Active listening and empathy. Open and non-judgmental communication. Encouraging patients to express their fears and concerns. Offering realistic hope and supporting decision-making. Speaker Notes: Effective counseling techniques help patients feel heard, validated, and empowered to make informed decisions about their treatment. Reference: Kissane, D. W., & Bultz, B. D. (2001). Psychosocial oncology: A perspective on what it is and why it is relevant. Psycho-Oncology, 10(3), 193-195.

Support for Families and Caregivers Educating families about cancer and its treatment. Offering family counseling and support groups. Encouraging open communication to reduce misunderstandings. Addressing caregiver burden and emotional needs. Speaker Notes: Families play a crucial role in the patient’s journey, and addressing their psychosocial needs is equally important for holistic cancer care. Reference: Northouse, L. L., Williams, A. L., Given, B., & McCorkle, R. (2012). Psychosocial care for family caregivers of patients with cancer. Journal of Clinical Oncology, 30(11), 1227-1234.

Overcoming Barriers in Psychosocial Care Limited time during consultations. Lack of training for oncologists in psychosocial care. Cultural barriers and stigma. Limited access to mental health professionals in oncology settings. Speaker Notes: Overcoming these barriers requires integrating psychosocial care into routine oncology practice and improving resources for mental health support. Reference: Jacobsen, P. B., & Wagner, L. I. (2012). A new quality standard: The integration of psychosocial care into routine cancer care. Journal of Clinical Oncology, 30(11), 1154-1159.
