About This Presentation

Description : Chemotherapy: Understanding Mechanisms, Uses, and Patient Care
Chemotherapy is a cornerstone of modern cancer treatment, widely used to target and destroy cancer cells throughout the body. This presentation, "Chemotherapy: Understanding Mechanisms, Uses, and Patient Care," offers a comprehensive overview of how chemotherapy works, its goals, and its critical role in oncology.
We delve into key topics such as the objectives of chemotherapy (curative, adjuvant, neoadjuvant, and palliative), its mechanism of action, and the various drug classes (e.g., alkylating agents, antimetabolites, mitotic inhibitors). Attendees will gain insights into the common delivery methods, from intravenous to oral administration, as well as the short-term and long-term side effects of treatment.
The presentation highlights effective strategies to manage chemotherapy-induced side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, and hair loss, and explores the latest advancements, including personalized medicine and combination therapies. Special attention is given to the importance of patient education and emotional support, ensuring better adherence and outcomes.
This presentation is a valuable resource for healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers seeking to better understand chemotherapy and optimize patient care. Explore the intricate balance between effective treatment and quality of life during cancer care.
Empowering patients and healthcare providers with knowledge to fight cancer effectively.

Chemotherapy Mechanisms, Applications, and Patient Care Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Chemotherapy? Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment that uses drugs to target and destroy cancer cells. Works by interfering with cell division and DNA replication. May be used alone or in combination with other cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy. Reference: DeVita, V. T., Lawrence, T. S., & Rosenberg, S. A. (2015). DeVita, Hellman, and Rosenberg's Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Why is Chemotherapy Used? Curative: To eliminate cancer entirely. Adjuvant Therapy: To reduce the risk of recurrence after surgery. Neoadjuvant Therapy: To shrink tumors before surgery or radiation. Palliative: To relieve symptoms and improve quality of life in advanced cancer. Reference: National Cancer Institute (NCI). Chemotherapy and You: Support for People with Cancer.
Slide 4-

How Does Chemotherapy Work? Targets rapidly dividing cells, including: Cancer cells. Normal rapidly dividing cells (e.g., hair follicles, bone marrow, digestive tract). Types of effects: Cytotoxic: Directly kills cancer cells. Cytostatic: Stops cell division. Reference: Alberts, D. S., & Hess, L. M. (2008). Fundamentals of Cancer Chemotherapy. Springer.
Slide 5-

Common Types of Chemotherapy Drugs Alkylating Agents: Mechanism: Damages DNA to prevent cancer cell replication. Example: Cyclophosphamide. Antimetabolites: Mechanism: Mimics cellular components to interfere with DNA synthesis. Example: Methotrexate. Mitotic Inhibitors: Mechanism: Stops cell division (mitosis). Example: Paclitaxel. Topoisomerase Inhibitors: Mechanism: Interrupts DNA unwinding for replication. Example: Irinotecan. Antitumor Antibiotics: Mechanism: Interferes with DNA enzymes. Example: Doxorubicin. Reference: Chabner, B. A., & Longo, D. L. (2011). Cancer Chemotherapy and Biotherapy: Principles and Practice. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
Slide 6-

How is Chemotherapy Delivered? Intravenous (IV): Most common method. Oral (Pills): Convenient but may require strict adherence. Intramuscular (IM) Injections: Rarely used. Localized Therapy: Intrathecal (spinal fluid). Intraperitoneal (abdominal cavity). Reference: American Cancer Society. Understanding Chemotherapy.
Slide 7-

Side Effects of Chemotherapy Common side effects due to damage to normal cells: Hair loss (alopecia). Nausea and vomiting. Fatigue. Myelosuppression (low blood cell counts). Mucositis (mouth sores). Long-term side effects: Heart or kidney damage. Infertility. Risk of secondary cancers. Reference: Berger, A. M., Shuster, J. L., & Von Roenn, J. H. (2012). Principles and Practice of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
Slide 8-

How to Manage Side Effects? Nausea/Vomiting: Antiemetics like ondansetron. Fatigue: Regular light exercise, proper nutrition. Anemia: Blood transfusions or erythropoietin-stimulating agents. Infections: Antibiotics, hygiene precautions. Hair Loss: Use of wigs, scalp cooling caps. Reference: Hickok, J. T., Roscoe, J. A., Morrow, G. R., & Ryan, J. L. (2005). Cancer treatment-induced nausea and vomiting. The Lancet Oncology.
Slide 9-

Recent Developments in Chemotherapy Combination therapies (chemotherapy with immunotherapy or targeted therapy). Personalized chemotherapy based on genetic profiling. Development of less toxic agents. Reference: Targeted Oncology. Emerging Trends in Chemotherapy Treatment.
Slide 10-

Patient Care in Chemotherapy Informing patients about treatment and side effects. Providing emotional and psychological support. Encouraging adherence to treatment schedules. Regular follow-ups to monitor progress and manage side effects. Reference: Corner, J., & Bailey, C. D. (2009). Cancer Nursing: Care in Context. Wiley-Blackwell.
