Types of Radiation Therapy An Overview of Techniques in Modern Cancer Treatment Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Radiation Therapy? Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. It is one of the most effective and widely used cancer treatments, delivered either externally or internally. Key objective: Maximize tumor control and minimize side effects. Speaker Notes: Introduce radiation therapy as a cornerstone of cancer treatment and highlight its precision and effectiveness in targeting cancer cells. Reference: Barton, M. B., et al. (2014). Estimating the optimal radiotherapy utilization rate for cancer. Radiotherapy and Oncology.

Types of Radiation Therapy External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) Internal Radiation Therapy (Brachytherapy) Systemic Radiation Therapy Specialized Techniques: Proton therapy, heavy ion therapy, stereotactic therapy. Speaker Notes: Provide an overview of the main types of radiation therapy, which differ in delivery methods and clinical applications.
Slide 4-

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) Delivers high-energy radiation from a machine (e.g., linear accelerator) to the tumor. Techniques: 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT): Shapes radiation beams to the tumor. Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): Modulates beam intensity for precise delivery. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT): Continuous radiation delivery as the machine rotates. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)/Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS): High-dose, precise treatment for small tumors. Speaker Notes: Highlight how EBRT is the most common radiation therapy, with advanced techniques like IMRT and SBRT improving precision and reducing toxicity. Reference: DeVita, V. T., et al. (2019). Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology.
Slide 5-

Internal Radiation Therapy (Brachytherapy) Delivers radiation by placing radioactive sources inside or near the tumor. Types: Low-Dose-Rate (LDR) Brachytherapy: Continuous radiation over days/weeks (e.g., prostate cancer). High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy: Short bursts of radiation over minutes (e.g., cervical cancer). Used for cancers like prostate, cervical, breast, and skin. Speaker Notes: Discuss the benefit of localized treatment in brachytherapy, which limits radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Reference: American Brachytherapy Society. (2021). Brachytherapy: A highly effective cancer treatment.
Slide 6-

Proton Therapy Uses protons instead of X-rays to deliver radiation. Benefits: High precision with minimal damage to surrounding tissues (ideal for pediatric and brain tumors). Proton beams deposit maximum energy at the tumor site (Bragg peak effect). Common uses: Brain, spine, and pediatric cancers. Speaker Notes: Proton therapy offers cutting-edge precision, especially beneficial in sensitive areas like the brain and for children to minimize long-term side effects. Reference: Durante, M., & Loeffler, J. S. (2010). Charged particles in radiation oncology. Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.
Slide 7-

Stereotactic Therapy Delivers very high doses of radiation in 1–5 sessions with pinpoint accuracy. Common for small tumors in the brain (SRS) or lungs/liver (SBRT). Benefits: Short treatment time, minimal side effects, non-invasive. Speaker Notes: Explain how stereotactic therapies are increasingly used for their high precision and efficacy in treating small, localized tumors. Reference: ASTRO (American Society for Radiation Oncology). (2020). Stereotactic body radiation therapy.
Slide 8-

Systemic Radiation Therapy Uses radioactive substances administered orally or intravenously. Example therapies: Radioactive Iodine (I-131): Used for thyroid cancer. Radiopharmaceuticals: Target bone metastases or other cancers. Benefits: Targets metastatic disease systemically. Speaker Notes: Systemic radiation therapy is particularly effective for treating widespread cancers or metastases, such as in thyroid cancer or bone lesions. Reference: National Cancer Institute. (2021). Systemic radiation therapy overview.

Comparison of Radiation Therapy Types Delivery Method: EBRT: External beam from a machine. Brachytherapy: Internal radioactive implants. Systemic: Radiation via bloodstream. Precision: Proton therapy > IMRT > 3D-CRT. Use Cases: EBRT: Most cancers. Brachytherapy: Prostate, cervical. Systemic: Thyroid, metastases. Speaker Notes: Summarize the strengths and unique applications of each type of radiation therapy.
Slide 10-

Advances in Radiation Therapy FLASH Therapy: Ultra-high dose rate radiation minimizes toxicity. Adaptive Radiation Therapy: Adjusting treatment in real-time. Integration with AI: Improving planning and delivery. Radiomics: Using imaging biomarkers to personalize treatment. Speaker Notes: Discuss how technology continues to evolve radiation therapy, making it safer, more precise, and more effective. Reference: Bourhis, J., et al. (2019). Clinical translation of FLASH radiotherapy. Radiotherapy and Oncology.
