About This Presentation

Description : Minimally Invasive Techniques in Oncology: Revolutionizing Cancer Surgery
Minimally invasive techniques are transforming oncology by offering precise, effective, and less traumatic surgical options for cancer treatment. These advanced methods, including laparoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), reduce recovery time, minimize pain, and enhance patient outcomes compared to traditional open surgeries.
This presentation, "Minimally Invasive Techniques in Oncology," provides an in-depth overview of these revolutionary methods. It explores how laparoscopy is used in gastrointestinal and gynecological cancers, robotic-assisted systems like the da Vinci Surgical System enable unparalleled precision in prostate and gynecological surgeries, and VATS is advancing lung cancer treatment with fewer complications.
With smaller incisions, less blood loss, and quicker recovery, these techniques represent the future of surgical oncology. The presentation also highlights the challenges, such as the steep learning curve for surgeons and high equipment costs, and looks at emerging innovations like artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and single-port surgeries that promise even greater precision and outcomes in cancer care.
Join us to discover how minimally invasive techniques are redefining cancer surgery and improving the quality of life for patients worldwide.

Minimally Invasive Techniques in Oncology Revolutionizing Cancer Surgery for Better Outcomes Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What Are Minimally Invasive Techniques? Definition: Surgical procedures performed through small incisions using advanced tools and technologies. Goals: Reduce trauma, improve recovery, and enhance precision in cancer surgeries. Popular techniques: Laparoscopy, robotic-assisted surgery, and endoscopic procedures. Reference: Schirmer, B. D., et al. (1991). Laparoscopic surgery: A historical perspective. Annals of Surgery.

Key Advantages of Minimally Invasive Surgery Smaller incisions → Less pain and faster recovery. Reduced risk of infections and complications. Shorter hospital stays and quicker return to daily activities. Improved cosmetic outcomes (minimal scarring). Reference: Jayne, D. G., et al. (2007). Systematic review of laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. BMJ.
Slide 4-

Common Minimally Invasive Techniques Laparoscopy: Using a laparoscope for procedures in the abdomen. Robotic-Assisted Surgery: Enhanced precision using robotic systems like the da Vinci Surgical System. Endoscopic Surgery: Non-surgical removal of tumors via natural body openings (e.g., endoscopic mucosal resection). Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS): Minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and mediastinal tumors. Reference: Feldman, L. S., et al. (2015). The SAGES manual of quality, outcomes, and patient safety.

Minimally Invasive Techniques in Cancer Treatment Colorectal Cancer: Laparoscopic colectomy for early-stage and advanced cases. Gynecological Cancers: Laparoscopy for hysterectomy and lymph node dissection in cervical and ovarian cancers. Prostate Cancer: Robotic prostatectomy for localized disease. Lung Cancer: VATS for lobectomy or wedge resection. Esophageal and Gastric Cancers: Laparoscopic or robotic resection. Reference: Buia, A., et al. (2015). Laparoscopic surgery: A qualified systematic review. World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery Enhanced visualization (3D magnification). Greater dexterity and precision in confined spaces. Reduced surgeon fatigue during complex procedures. Common robotic systems: da Vinci Surgical System, ROSA, Versius. Reference: Menon, M., et al. (2002). Laparoscopic and robotic radical prostatectomy. Urologic Clinics of North America.

Laparoscopy First-line approach for colorectal, gynecological, and gastrointestinal cancers. Tools: Laparoscope, trocars, and specialized instruments. Benefits: High accuracy with minimal invasiveness. Reference: Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). (2015). Laparoscopy in cancer surgery: Guidelines.
Slide 8-

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) Minimally invasive approach to lung cancer and mediastinal tumors. Indications: Lobectomy, biopsy, wedge resection. Outcomes: Shorter recovery and better respiratory function post-surgery. Reference: Yan, T. D., et al. (2009). Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer: Systematic review. Chest.
Slide 9-

Endoscopic Techniques Diagnostic role: Biopsies and staging (e.g., EUS-guided biopsies). Therapeutic role: Resection of early tumors (e.g., endoscopic mucosal resection, EMR). Common cancers: Gastric, colorectal, esophageal. Reference: Karimi, P., et al. (2014). Gastric cancer: Descriptive epidemiology, risk factors, screening, and prevention. Cancer Epidemiology.
Slide 10-

Challenges in Minimally Invasive Techniques Steep learning curve for surgeons. High cost of advanced technologies (e.g., robotic systems). Limited application in advanced or metastatic cancers. Patient selection criteria: Not all cases are suitable for minimally invasive techniques. Reference: Hadi, A., et al. (2020). Cost-effectiveness of robotic surgery in oncology. International Journal of Medical Robotics.
Slide 11-

Future Directions Artificial Intelligence (AI) in surgical planning and real-time decision-making. Augmented Reality (AR) for enhanced visualization. Single-port laparoscopic surgery. Integration of robotics with molecular imaging for better tumor localization. Reference: Hashimoto, D. A., et al. (2018). Artificial intelligence in surgery: Promises and perils. Annals of Surgery.
