About This Presentation

Description : Financial Toxicity in Oncology: Understanding and Addressing the Economic Burden
Cancer care has advanced significantly, but these innovations come with high costs, leading to financial toxicity for patients. Financial toxicity refers to the economic hardship faced by cancer patients due to treatment expenses, including direct costs like chemotherapy and indirect costs like lost wages and travel. This burden often results in treatment non-adherence, poorer outcomes, and even bankruptcy for patients and families.
This presentation, "Financial Toxicity in Oncology: Addressing the Economic Burden of Cancer Care," explores the causes and impact of financial toxicity, such as high drug prices, out-of-pocket expenses, and healthcare disparities. It discusses the psychosocial consequences, including stress and anxiety, and its disproportionate effect on vulnerable populations.
The presentation provides actionable strategies to mitigate financial toxicity, including patient assistance programs, cost transparency, policy reforms, and value-based care models. It emphasizes the critical role of oncologists in identifying and addressing financial challenges to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Join us to understand how addressing financial toxicity can lead to more equitable cancer care, better treatment adherence, and improved quality of life for patients.
Knowledge is the first step in reducing the economic burden of cancer care.

Financial Toxicity in Oncology Exploring the Impact of Treatment Costs on Patients and Healthcare Systems Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Financial Toxicity in Oncology? Financial toxicity refers to the economic burden and hardship faced by cancer patients due to the high cost of treatment. Includes direct costs (e.g., treatments, medications) and indirect costs (e.g., lost income, travel expenses). Affects quality of life, treatment adherence, and outcomes. Speaker Notes: Financial toxicity is an increasingly recognized side effect of cancer care that impacts patients' ability to manage costs while seeking necessary treatment. It is vital to understand its implications and address them. Reference: Zafar, S. Y., & Abernethy, A. P. (2013). Financial toxicity, Part I: A new name for a growing problem. The Oncologist, 18(4), 341–343.

The Rising Costs of Cancer Care Global cancer care costs exceed $150 billion annually (source: WHO). High-cost drugs and therapies like immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Additional financial burden due to long-term care and survivorship. Speaker Notes: Cancer care costs are rising globally, fueled by advances in therapies like immunotherapy and targeted therapy. These costs often place an unmanageable burden on patients. Reference: WHO Global Cancer Report (2020).

How Financial Toxicity Affects Patients Treatment non-adherence: Skipping doses or avoiding treatment. Increased stress and anxiety, leading to poorer outcomes. Bankruptcy and long-term debt. Delayed or inadequate follow-up care. Speaker Notes: Financial toxicity has a significant impact on patient outcomes, with many patients unable to afford full treatment plans, leading to worsened health conditions. Reference: Zafar, S. Y., & Ubel, P. A. (2019). Financial toxicity in cancer care: How should we address it?. JAMA Oncology, 5(7), 965–966.

Financial Toxicity and Inequities in Cancer Care Disproportionate impact on low-income and minority groups. Limited access to high-cost therapies and trials. Rural and underinsured populations face higher financial burdens. Speaker Notes: Financial toxicity exacerbates healthcare disparities, disproportionately affecting marginalized populations who already have limited access to quality care. Reference: Jemal, A., & Siegel, R. (2018). Cancer statistics and disparities: Progress and challenge. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, 68(5), 394–424.

Strategies to Mitigate Financial Toxicity Patient assistance programs and financial counseling. Transparent cost discussions between patients and providers. Healthcare policies to cap out-of-pocket expenses. Supportive care: Addressing indirect costs. Speaker Notes: Addressing financial toxicity requires systemic changes, patient support programs, and open communication between healthcare providers and patients about costs. Reference: Ramsey, S. D., & Blough, D. K. (2019). Impact of financial toxicity on cancer care outcomes and strategies for mitigation. The Oncologist, 24(4), 443–450.

Role of Oncologists and Healthcare Teams Assess financial well-being as part of patient care. Refer patients to financial counselors or support services. Advocate for cost-effective treatment plans. Promote inclusion of financial toxicity in clinical trial designs. Speaker Notes: Oncologists play a critical role in addressing financial toxicity by proactively assessing financial challenges and offering resources. Reference: Khera, N. (2019). Moving Toward Financially Sustainable Cancer Care Value-based care models for cancer treatment. Integration of financial toxicity assessments in cancer care plans. Advancements in policies to reduce drug prices and healthcare costs. Patient education on financial resources and support. Speaker Notes: The future of oncology care must address financial toxicity with value-based care, integrated support systems, and equitable healthcare policies. Reference: Meropol, N. J., & Schulman, K. A. (2007). Cost of cancer care: Issues and implications. Journal of Clinical Oncology, 25(2), 180–186.

Conclusion Financial toxicity is a critical barrier to equitable cancer care. Requires systemic changes, patient-centered support, and collaborative efforts. Healthcare professionals must prioritize addressing financial challenges to improve outcomes and quality of life. Speaker Notes: Financial toxicity is a pressing issue in oncology, and tackling it is essential to delivering equitable and effective cancer care.
