Mammograms don’t look fun but they can save a life! Approximately 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer over a life time.

What is mammography..?? The primary breast imaging modality that seeks to detect breast abnormalities using X-rays which may primarily indicate the early presence of breast cancer before it becomes clinically apparent. It was shown to reduce mortality by 25%–52% in randomized controlled trials. A low radiation dose is especially important to avoid soft tissue damage and to provide the best differential attenuation between normal tissue and cancerous tissue.

3. Important findings Mass, asymmetry, architectural distortion and calcifications. Shape, density, size, location, border definition, unilateral or bilateral, surrounding tissue, increasing in number from prior mammogram and distribution of anomalies are always considered as mammographic characteristics that serves as a “flag” to be attentive to this area for further study, rather than an absolute assurance of underlying disease.

3. Important findings Asymmetric density represents an area of tissue with fibroglandular structures that is more extensive in one breast relative to the corresponding region in contralateral breast. When a potential mass is seen only in one view/projection on a mammogram, it is called an asymmetry until its three-dimensionality is confirmed. 4. Correlation & Comparison Radiologist should correlate mammographic characteristic with clinical and historical information. Radiologist compares current and prior exams to determine the necessity to change or stability. However comparison is irrelevant when the finding has firmly benign features or is inherently suspicious for malignancy.

Newer applications Computer-aided detection and diagnosis software helps highlighting the areas of calcifications and masses. Digital breast tomosynthesis consists of using a moving x-ray tube to obtain multiple projections at different depths, then reconstructing images in sections similar to CT. Dual-energy subtraction contrast-enhanced mammography features intravenous contrast and can detect some of the cancer when standard mammography findings are suspicious.
