Emerging Techniques in Radiation Oncology Innovations Shaping the Future of Cancer Treatment Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

The Evolution of Radiation Oncology Radiation therapy has transformed cancer treatment over the last century. Innovations aim to improve precision, reduce toxicity, and enhance treatment outcomes. Emerging techniques focus on personalized, image-guided, and adaptive approaches. Speaker Notes: Emphasize how new techniques are bridging the gap between precision and patient-centered care in radiation oncology. Reference: Hall, E. J., & Giaccia, A. J. (2018). Radiobiology for the Radiologist.
Slide 3-

Proton Beam Therapy Uses protons instead of X-rays for tumor targeting. Delivers a higher dose to tumors while sparing surrounding healthy tissues. Particularly useful for pediatric cancers, brain tumors, and head and neck cancers. Advantage: The "Bragg Peak" effect, where the energy is deposited at a specific depth. Speaker Notes: Highlight how proton therapy reduces long-term side effects, especially in children. Reference: Durante, M., & Loeffler, J. S. (2010). Charged particles in radiation oncology. Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.
Slide 4-

MR-Guided Radiation Therapy (MR-LINAC) Combines MRI imaging with a linear accelerator for real-time visualization. Allows adaptation of radiation delivery during treatment sessions. Ideal for moving tumors (e.g., lungs, abdomen) and soft tissue cancers. Speaker Notes: Discuss how MR-LINAC enhances precision and ensures the tumor is targeted even during motion, such as breathing. Reference: Acharya, S., et al. (2018). Clinical utility of MR-guided radiotherapy in oncology. Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Slide 5-

FLASH Radiotherapy Delivers ultra-high doses of radiation in milliseconds. Reduces normal tissue toxicity while maintaining tumor control. Early trials suggest potential for safer, more effective treatments. Speaker Notes: Explain how FLASH radiotherapy represents a paradigm shift by reducing treatment time and side effects. Reference: Bourhis, J., et al. (2019). Clinical translation of FLASH radiotherapy. Radiotherapy and Oncology.
Slide 6-

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) Delivers high-dose radiation to small, well-defined tumors with extreme precision. Reduces the number of treatment sessions (hypofractionation). Commonly used for lung, liver, and spinal tumors. Speaker Notes: Highlight SBRT as a non-invasive alternative to surgery for certain cancers. Reference: Timmerman, R. D., et al. (2010). Stereotactic body radiation therapy for inoperable early-stage lung cancer. JAMA.
Slide 7-

Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) Modifies treatment plans based on anatomical changes (e.g., tumor shrinkage, weight loss). Incorporates real-time imaging to account for daily changes. Improves accuracy and reduces unnecessary radiation to healthy tissues. Speaker Notes: Explain the importance of ART in managing tumors that shrink or shift during treatment. Reference: Yan, D., et al. (2013). Adaptive radiation therapy. Physics in Medicine & Biology.
Slide 8-

Radiomics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Radiomics extracts quantitative data from imaging to guide treatment. AI optimizes treatment planning and predicts patient outcomes. Potential for personalized radiation therapy based on tumor characteristics. Speaker Notes: Discuss how AI-driven tools are revolutionizing treatment planning by analyzing large datasets to deliver precision care. Reference: Lambin, P., et al. (2017). Radiomics: Extracting more information from medical images using advanced feature analysis. European Journal of Cancer.
Slide 9-

Heavy Ion Therapy Uses carbon ions for treating radioresistant tumors. Provides higher linear energy transfer (LET) for better tumor control. Effective for hard-to-treat cancers like chordomas and sarcomas. Speaker Notes: Mention the growing global interest in heavy ion therapy centers. Reference: Kanai, T., et al. (2012). The clinical application of carbon ion radiotherapy. Radiotherapy and Oncology.
Slide 10-

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) Combines imaging and treatment delivery for better targeting. Used for tumors that move or change during treatment (e.g., lung, prostate). Techniques: Cone-beam CT, 4D CT. Speaker Notes: Highlight the ability of IGRT to reduce setup errors and ensure treatment accuracy. Reference: Wong, J. R., et al. (2011). Advances in IGRT for cancer treatment. Radiotherapy and Oncology.
Slide 11-

Combining Radiation with Immunotherapy Radiation enhances the immune response by releasing tumor antigens. Potential for the "abscopal effect," where radiation to one site triggers systemic immune responses. Combining checkpoint inhibitors with radiation for improved outcomes. Speaker Notes: Discuss how radiation therapy is no longer limited to local control but also impacts systemic disease through immune modulation. Reference: Demaria, S., et al. (2015). Combining radiation therapy and immunotherapy. Science Translational Medicine.
Slide 12-

The Future of Radiation Oncology Wider adoption of AI and machine learning for personalized treatment. Expanding access to advanced techniques in low- and middle-income countries. Clinical trials exploring novel combinations of therapies. Speaker Notes: Conclude by emphasizing the future potential of these techniques to improve global cancer care. Reference: ASTRO (2021). Advances in Radiation Therapy: Expanding the Horizon.
