About This Presentation

Description : Radiotherapy in Reproductive Oncology: Applications and Advancements
Radiotherapy is a critical component in the treatment of reproductive cancers, offering curative, adjuvant, and palliative care options. It is widely used in the management of cancers such as cervical, endometrial, prostate, and vulvar cancers, providing effective tumor control while improving survival outcomes.
This presentation, “Radiotherapy in Reproductive Oncology,” delves into the types of radiotherapy, including external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), brachytherapy, and advanced techniques like intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Each approach is tailored to minimize damage to healthy tissues while targeting cancer cells with precision.
Key topics include:
- Applications in gynecologic and male reproductive cancers.
- Advances in radiotherapy technology, including image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and proton therapy.
- Side effect management for acute and late toxicities such as skin irritation, fatigue, and organ damage.
The presentation also explores the integration of radiotherapy with chemotherapy, surgery, and immunotherapy to enhance outcomes. By understanding the role of radiotherapy, healthcare professionals and patients can make informed decisions that improve both treatment efficacy and quality of life.
Discover how radiotherapy continues to shape the future of cancer care in reproductive oncology.

Radiotherapy in Reproductive Oncology Advancements, Applications, and Outcomes Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Overview of Radiotherapy in Reproductive Oncology Radiotherapy is a cornerstone in the treatment of reproductive cancers. Commonly used for cervical, endometrial, vaginal, vulvar, and prostate cancers. Goals: Cure, symptom relief, and palliative care. Speaker Notes: Radiotherapy can be delivered as external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) or brachytherapy. It plays a vital role in managing gynecological cancers, especially in locally advanced stages. Reference: National Cancer Institute (NCI). (2021). Radiation therapy for cancer treatment.

Types of Radiotherapy in Reproductive Oncology External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT): Delivers radiation from outside the body. Used for large treatment areas. Brachytherapy: Internal radiation therapy. Common for cervical and endometrial cancers. Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SBRT): High-precision radiation, used for specific cases like prostate cancer. Reference: American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). (2020). Radiation therapy options for gynecologic cancers.

Role of Radiotherapy in Gynecologic Cancers Cervical Cancer: Standard treatment for locally advanced stages. Often combined with chemotherapy (chemoradiation). Endometrial Cancer: Adjuvant therapy post-surgery to reduce recurrence risk. Vaginal and Vulvar Cancers: Treatment for early-stage and recurrent disease. Ovarian Cancer: Rarely used; reserved for palliative care or specific metastases. Speaker Notes: Radiotherapy is a mainstay in cervical cancer treatment but plays an evolving role in endometrial and vulvar cancers. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). (2022). Clinical practice guidelines in oncology for gynecologic cancers.

Role of Radiotherapy in Male Reproductive Cancers Prostate Cancer: Primary treatment for localized and locally advanced cases. Post-prostatectomy radiation for positive margins. Testicular Cancer: Used in seminomas for localized disease. Palliative care in advanced stages. Penile Cancer: Rare; used for select cases of advanced disease. Speaker Notes: Radiotherapy is widely used in prostate cancer, often combined with androgen deprivation therapy for better outcomes. Reference: Cancer Research UK. (2021). Radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

Techniques and Advances in Radiotherapy Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT): Delivers precise radiation doses, sparing healthy tissue. Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT): Real-time imaging to target tumors accurately. Proton Therapy: Uses protons for high precision and minimal side effects. Adaptive Radiotherapy: Adjusts the treatment plan based on tumor changes. Reference: De Los Santos, J. F., et al. (2020). Advances in radiotherapy for gynecologic cancers. International Journal of Radiation Oncology.

Side Effects of Radiotherapy Acute side effects: Skin irritation, fatigue, diarrhea, cystitis. Late side effects: Vaginal stenosis, radiation proctitis, lymphedema. Strategies to reduce side effects: Vaginal dilators, pelvic floor exercises, dietary adjustments. Speaker Notes: Long-term side effects like vaginal stenosis and radiation proctitis can significantly impact quality of life, requiring proactive management. Reference: Bentzen, S. M., et al. (2021). Toxicity profiles in radiation oncology: Managing side effects.

Radiotherapy in Combination Treatments Chemoradiation: Most effective in cervical cancer. Enhances tumor control. Surgery + Radiotherapy: Common in endometrial and prostate cancer. Reduces recurrence risk. Immunotherapy + Radiotherapy: Emerging approach to enhance immune response. Reference: Howell, D., et al. (2021). Palliative care in oncology: Radiotherapy's role. Journal of Supportive Oncology.

Palliative Radiotherapy Provides symptom relief in advanced or metastatic disease. Common applications: Pain management for bone metastases. Control of bleeding in advanced gynecological cancers. Relief of obstructive symptoms. Speaker Notes: Palliative radiotherapy focuses on improving quality of life for patients with incurable cancers. Reference: Howell, D., et al. (2021). Palliative care in oncology: Radiotherapy's role. Journal of Supportive Oncology.

Outcomes and Survival Benefits Increased survival rates in locally advanced cervical and prostate cancers. Improved quality of life through symptom control. Reduced recurrence rates with adjuvant therapies. Reference: Han, K., et al. (2022). Survival outcomes in radiotherapy for gynecologic cancers.
