About This Presentation

Description : Survivorship in Gynecologic Oncology: Supporting Women Beyond Treatment
Survivorship in gynecologic oncology focuses on improving the quality of life for women living beyond cancer. This presentation, “Survivorship in Gynecologic Oncology,” highlights the physical, emotional, and social challenges that survivors face and provides strategies for holistic post-treatment care.
Survivors of gynecologic cancers often experience long-term side effects from treatments, such as fatigue, pain, menopausal symptoms, and sexual health issues. Emotional challenges, such as anxiety about recurrence, depression, and body image concerns, are also common. This presentation explores practical approaches to managing these challenges, including regular follow-ups, lifestyle modifications, psychological counseling, and fertility preservation options.
A key focus is the creation of survivorship care plans, which include personalized guidelines for monitoring health, managing late treatment effects, and promoting healthy habits. We also discuss the role of support groups, advocacy, and community engagement in empowering survivors and reducing isolation.
By addressing these unique needs, healthcare providers can ensure comprehensive, patient-centered care for gynecologic cancer survivors. This presentation is a valuable resource for healthcare professionals, survivors, and caregivers, offering actionable insights to enhance survivorship journeys.
Take the first step toward understanding survivorship care and improving outcomes for gynecologic cancer survivors.

What Is Cancer Survivorship? Survivorship encompasses physical, emotional, social, and economic aspects of living with and beyond cancer. Focuses on long-term health, well-being, and quality of life. Survivors of gynecologic cancers face unique challenges that require specialized care. Speaker Notes: Survivorship begins from the moment of diagnosis and continues throughout the patient’s life. In gynecologic oncology, survivorship care involves addressing physical recovery, managing side effects, and providing emotional and social support. Reference: Hewitt, M., Greenfield, S., & Stovall, E. (2005). From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition. National Academies Press.

Challenges Faced by Gynecologic Cancer Survivors Physical Challenges: Fatigue, pain, and lymphedema. Menopausal symptoms due to treatment-induced ovarian failure. Sexual dysfunction. Emotional Challenges: Anxiety about recurrence. Depression and body image issues. Social and Economic Challenges: Difficulty returning to work. Financial toxicity from prolonged treatment. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Cancer Survivorship: Living with or Beyond Cancer.

Physical Health and Long-Term Effects Monitoring for cancer recurrence with regular follow-ups. Managing late treatment effects (e.g., bowel/bladder issues, lymphedema). Lifestyle modifications: Healthy diet and exercise. Smoking cessation and reducing alcohol consumption. Speaker Notes: Many survivors experience persistent side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation. Rehabilitation and personalized care plans help improve their quality of life. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). (2022). Survivorship Guidelines.

Addressing Emotional and Psychological Needs Psychological Support: Counseling for anxiety, depression, and body image concerns. Mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Social Support: Peer support groups. Family and caregiver counseling. Speaker Notes: Survivors often struggle with fear of recurrence and psychological trauma from their cancer journey. Integrating mental health support into survivorship care is critical. Reference: Holland, J. C., & Alici, Y. (2010). Management of distress in cancer patients. The Journal of Supportive Oncology.

Sexual Health and Intimacy Addressing treatment-related issues: Vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse. Libido changes due to hormonal therapy or menopause. Interventions: Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants. Pelvic floor therapy. Open communication with partners and sexual health counseling. Speaker Notes: Survivors often avoid discussing sexual health due to stigma. Creating a safe space for these conversations can improve relationships and overall well-being. Reference: Carter, J., Goldfrank, D., & Schover, L. R. (2011). Simple strategies for vaginal health promotion in cancer survivors. Journal of Cancer Survivorship.

Fertility Preservation and Family Planning Effects of gynecologic cancer treatment on fertility. Options for fertility preservation: Egg/embryo freezing. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Counseling on alternative family-building options (e.g., surrogacy, adoption). Speaker Notes: For young survivors, fertility concerns are a significant part of survivorship care. Fertility counseling should be integrated early in the treatment process. Reference: Oktay, K., et al. (2018). Fertility preservation in patients with cancer: ASCO clinical practice guideline update. Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Survivorship Care Plans Components of a care plan: Summary of treatment received. Schedule for follow-ups and screenings. Management of late effects and comorbidities. Health promotion and lifestyle recommendations. Role of a multidisciplinary team (oncologists, psychologists, dietitians, etc.). Speaker Notes: Survivorship care plans are essential for coordinated and holistic care. They empower patients by keeping them informed about their health. Reference: American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). (2021). Survivorship Care Plans Toolkit.

Role of Support Groups and Advocacy Benefits of joining support groups: Sharing experiences and reducing isolation. Learning from other survivors. Role of advocacy: Raising awareness about gynecologic cancers. Empowering survivors to speak about their journey. Reference: Cancer Support Community (2022). The value of support groups in survivorship.

Case Study: Palliative Care in Advanced Ovarian Cancer Patient Scenario: 55-year-old woman with advanced ovarian cancer. Challenges: Pain, fatigue, emotional distress, caregiver strain. Palliative Interventions: Pain control with opioids. Counseling for emotional distress. Advance care planning discussions. Speaker Notes: Use this case to illustrate the effectiveness of palliative care in addressing complex needs. Reference: Cancer Support Community (2022). The value of support groups in survivorship.
