About This Presentation

Description : Types of Cancer Surgeries: Understanding Surgical Approaches in Cancer Treatment
Surgery plays a vital role in cancer treatment, offering patients options to remove tumors, manage symptoms, and improve their quality of life. This presentation, "Types of Cancer Surgeries," provides a detailed overview of the surgical approaches used in oncology, tailored to meet the unique needs of patients at various stages of their cancer journey.
The presentation explores key surgical types, including:
Curative Surgery: Aimed at removing the tumor entirely, often with nearby tissues or lymph nodes to prevent recurrence.
Preventive Surgery: Reduces cancer risk in high-risk individuals, such as prophylactic mastectomies for BRCA mutation carriers.
Palliative Surgery: Focused on alleviating symptoms and enhancing comfort in advanced-stage cancers.
Reconstructive Surgery: Restores functionality and appearance after tumor removal, such as breast reconstruction post-mastectomy.
Additionally, it highlights the benefits of modern surgical techniques like minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgeries, which reduce recovery time and improve precision. This presentation is a valuable resource for healthcare professionals and patients to better understand how surgery is integrated into comprehensive cancer care.
Learn how these approaches improve survival rates, provide symptom relief, and enhance the overall patient experience in cancer treatment.

Types of Cancer Surgeries Understanding Surgical Approaches in Cancer Care Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Introduction to Cancer Surgery Surgery is a cornerstone of cancer treatment. Goals: Remove tumors, alleviate symptoms, and improve quality of life. Can be combined with other modalities such as chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy. Advancements in surgical techniques have significantly improved outcomes. Speaker Notes: Emphasize the importance of cancer surgeries as part of a multidisciplinary approach. Highlight that each surgery type serves specific purposes based on the stage and type of cancer. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Understanding Cancer Surgery: A Guide for Patients.
Slide 3-

Curative Surgery Aim: Remove the entire tumor with clean margins. Best for localized cancers that haven’t spread (e.g., early-stage breast or colon cancer). May involve removing nearby lymph nodes to prevent metastasis. Examples: Lumpectomy or mastectomy for breast cancer. Colectomy for colon cancer. Reference: DeVita, V. T., Hellman, S., & Rosenberg, S. A. (2018). Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology.
Slide 4-

Preventive (Prophylactic) Surgery Aim: Remove tissues or organs at high risk of developing cancer. Examples: BRCA Mutation: Prophylactic mastectomy to prevent breast cancer. Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP): Colectomy to prevent colon cancer. Often performed in patients with a strong genetic predisposition. Reference: National Cancer Institute (NCI). (2021). Prophylactic Surgery for Cancer Prevention.
Slide 5-

Diagnostic Surgery Aim: Obtain a tissue sample for biopsy to confirm the presence of cancer. Common techniques: Incisional biopsy: Removing part of a tumor. Excisional biopsy: Removing the entire suspicious area. Often used before determining further treatment plans. Examples: Lymph node biopsy for suspected lymphoma. Endoscopic biopsy for GI cancers. Reference: Fletcher, C. D. M. (2019). Diagnostic Histopathology of Tumors..
Slide 6-

Staging Surgery Aim: Determine the extent of cancer spread. Helps in treatment planning. Commonly used for cancers like lung, abdominal, or ovarian cancer. May involve laparoscopy for minimally invasive examination. Speaker Notes: Explain that staging surgeries are crucial in assigning a cancer stage (e.g., TNM system) and guiding further treatment. Reference: Siegel, R. L., et al. (2020). Cancer Statistics, 2020. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
Slide 7-

Debulking Surgery Aim: Remove as much of the tumor as possible when complete removal is not feasible. Used to: Improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation. Reduce symptoms caused by large tumors. Common for cancers like ovarian cancer. Examples: Cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer. Debulking large gastrointestinal tumors. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). (2021). Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.
Slide 8-

Palliative Surgery Aim: Relieve symptoms and improve quality of life in advanced-stage cancer. Does not aim to cure cancer. Examples: Relieving bowel obstruction caused by abdominal tumors. Managing spinal cord compression. Speaker Notes: Palliative surgeries play a vital role in addressing pain, bleeding, or obstruction caused by advanced cancer. Reference: Ferrell, B., et al. (2015). Palliative Care in Oncology. Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Slide 9-

Reconstructive Surgery Aim: Restore appearance or function after tumor removal. Examples: Breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Facial reconstruction after head and neck cancer surgery. Techniques: Tissue flaps, implants, or skin grafts. Reference: Nahabedian, M. Y. (2017). Breast Reconstruction with Autologous Tissue.
Slide 10-

Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Use of laparoscopic or robotic techniques for precision and faster recovery. Benefits: Smaller incisions. Reduced recovery time and complications. Commonly used for prostate, colorectal, and gynecological cancers. Reference: O’Sullivan, M. J., et al. (2019). Minimally Invasive Surgical Oncology. Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America.
Slide 11-

Advanced Techniques Fluorescence-guided surgery: Enhanced tumor visualization. Laser surgery for precision in sensitive areas. Cryosurgery: Freezing cancer cells. Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). Speaker Notes: Emerging techniques like fluorescence-guided surgery and IORT are improving surgical outcomes and precision. Reference: Stummer, W., et al. (2019). Fluorescence-Guided Neurosurgery. The Lancet Oncology.

Key Takeaways Cancer surgeries are tailored to specific goals: curative, preventive, diagnostic, staging, debulking, palliative, and reconstructive. Advancements in surgical techniques are improving outcomes and recovery. Collaboration between surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists is crucial for optimal care.
