About This Presentation

Description : Prevention and Early Detection in Pediatric Cancers
Pediatric cancers pose a significant global health challenge, but prevention and early detection can greatly improve outcomes. This presentation, “Prevention and Early Detection in Pediatric Cancers,” highlights actionable strategies to lower cancer risks in children and detect early warning signs to ensure timely treatment.
The presentation focuses on the role of vaccinations (e.g., HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines) in reducing cancer risks, as well as minimizing environmental exposures like secondhand smoke and carcinogens. The importance of healthy prenatal care and avoiding teratogens is also emphasized as key preventive measures.
For early detection, the presentation discusses common warning signs of pediatric cancers, including unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, lumps, and prolonged fever. It also highlights the role of screening for high-risk children with genetic predispositions, such as those with Li-Fraumeni syndrome or family histories of cancer.
By combining awareness, public health initiatives, and advances in technology like genetic testing and liquid biopsies, healthcare professionals, parents, and caregivers can take proactive steps to save lives. With early detection and prevention, the chances of survival and better quality of life improve significantly.
Learn how to make a difference in fighting pediatric cancers with knowledge and action today.

Prevention and Early Detection in pediatric cancers Improving Outcomes Through Proactive Measures Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Why Focus on Pediatric Cancer Prevention and Detection? Pediatric cancers are the second leading cause of death in children worldwide. While many pediatric cancers have no known preventable causes, early detection significantly improves survival rates. Aim: To reduce incidence, detect cancers early, and provide timely treatment. Speaker Notes: Discuss the unique nature of pediatric cancers and how prevention and early detection play a vital role in improving survival outcomes and quality of life. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Cancer Facts & Figures 2021.

Strategies for Preventing Pediatric Cancers Vaccination: HPV vaccine: Reduces risk of future cervical and oropharyngeal cancers. Hepatitis B vaccine: Reduces liver cancer risk. Limiting Exposure to Carcinogens: Avoid secondhand smoke and air pollution. Reduce exposure to pesticides and industrial chemicals. Healthy Pregnancy: Proper prenatal care to avoid teratogens. Preventing maternal infections during pregnancy (e.g., Zika, CMV). Speaker Notes: While most pediatric cancers are not preventable, reducing environmental exposures and promoting vaccinations can lower risks. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). (2021). Vaccines for Cancer Prevention. World Health Organization (WHO). (2020). Global Childhood Cancer Initiative.

Role of Genetics in Pediatric Cancers 5–10% of pediatric cancers are linked to inherited genetic mutations. Examples: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (TP53 mutation). Retinoblastoma (RB1 mutation). Neurofibromatosis type 1. Genetic counseling for families with a history of pediatric cancers. Importance of early genetic testing for high-risk families. Speaker Notes: Emphasize the role of genetic testing and family history in identifying children at risk and enabling early interventions. Reference: Knudson, A. G. (2001). Two-hit hypothesis and hereditary cancers. Nature Reviews Cancer.

Early Detection in Pediatric Cancers Common symptoms to watch for: Unexplained weight loss. Persistent fatigue or weakness. Fever without infection. Lumps or swelling, especially in the abdomen. Headaches with vomiting. Bruising or bleeding without injury. Parents and pediatricians play a critical role in recognizing early signs. Speaker Notes: Discuss how pediatricians and parents should collaborate in recognizing early symptoms that may warrant further evaluation. Reference: American Academy of Pediatrics. (2021). Guidelines for Pediatric Cancer Symptoms.

Role of Screening in Pediatric Oncology Unlike adults, routine cancer screening is rare in children. Screening is recommended for: Children with genetic predispositions (e.g., MRI for Li-Fraumeni syndrome). Newborn screening for retinoblastoma or congenital tumors. Advances in liquid biopsies and non-invasive testing for high-risk children. Speaker Notes: Screening programs are limited to high-risk groups, but emerging technologies like liquid biopsies may revolutionize early detection. Reference: Schneider, M. et al. (2020). Liquid biopsy for pediatric cancers. Cancer Research.

Importance of Public Awareness Educating parents and communities about early cancer signs. School-based awareness programs. Advocacy for improved access to healthcare and genetic testing. Partnerships with non-profits and international health organizations. Speaker Notes: Public awareness campaigns are vital in promoting timely medical intervention and reducing diagnostic delays. Reference: International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP). (2021). Global Advocacy for Pediatric Cancer Awareness.

Innovations in Early Detection Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in diagnosing pediatric cancers. Next-generation sequencing for genetic screening. Biomarker discovery and liquid biopsy applications. Portable imaging tools for underserved regions. Speaker Notes: Discuss how technological innovations are transforming the landscape of early cancer detection in children. Reference: Mertens, A. C. et al. (2021). Emerging technologies in pediatric cancer care. The Lancet Oncology.

Multimodal Therapy in Pediatric Oncology ombining surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Benefits: Higher cure rates. Tailored to cancer type and stage. Example: Neuroblastoma treatment: Surgery + Chemotherapy + Dinutuximab (immunotherapy). Speaker Notes: Explain how multimodal therapy achieves synergy by combining complementary treatment strategies. Reference: Matthay, K. K., Villablanca, J. G., Seeger, R. C., et al. (2009). Treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma with intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy, autologous bone marrow transplantation, and 13-cis-retinoic acid. New England Journal of Medicine, 341(2), 1165–1173.

Challenges in Preventing and Detecting Pediatric Cancers Limited access to specialized healthcare in low-resource settings. Delays in diagnosis due to overlapping symptoms with common illnesses. Financial constraints for families. Cultural and social stigma surrounding cancer. Speaker Notes: Highlight the disparities in pediatric cancer detection and treatment across different regions and socioeconomic groups. Reference: Ginsburg, O. et al. (2017). Disparities in childhood cancer care globally. The Lancet.
