Introduction to Body Image and Self-Esteem in Gynecology Body image and self-esteem are critical components of mental and physical health in gynecology. Gynecological conditions and treatments can influence a woman's perception of her body and her self-worth. Objective: Understand how body image impacts women’s health and explore ways to support positive self-esteem. Speaker Notes: In gynecology, body image and self-esteem are important but often overlooked aspects of patient care. From adolescence to menopause, gynecological health can significantly impact how women feel about their bodies. Reference: Cash, T. F., & Pruzinsky, T. (2002). Body image: A handbook of theory, research, and clinical practice. Guilford Press.

Understanding Body Image and Self-Esteem Body Image: A person’s perception, thoughts, and feelings about their physical appearance. Self-Esteem: Overall evaluation of one’s worth, including how one values their body. Influences include societal standards, media portrayals, and personal experiences. Speaker Notes: Body image relates to a woman’s perception of her physical appearance, while self-esteem encompasses her overall sense of self-worth. Both are interconnected and influenced by various external factors, including cultural and societal pressures. Reference: Tiggemann, M. (2004). Body image across the adult life span: Stability and change. Body Image, 1(1), 29-41.

Body Image and Gynecological Health Gynecological conditions (e.g., PCOS, endometriosis) can alter body perception. Surgeries and medical treatments may impact physical appearance. Fertility issues and menopause can cause shifts in body image and self-esteem. Speaker Notes: Many gynecological conditions, such as PCOS, can affect physical characteristics like weight or body hair, which may influence a woman's self-image. Additionally, life changes such as menopause or infertility can challenge self-worth and body perception. Reference: Himelein, M. J., & Thatcher, S. S. (2006). Polycystic ovary syndrome and mental health: A review. Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 61(11), 723-732.

Impact of Societal Standards on Body Image Media promotes unrealistic body ideals (thinness, youth). Societal pressure can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy. Gynecological patients often feel pressure to conform to these norms, impacting self-esteem. Speaker Notes: Society and media have set unrealistic beauty standards, especially regarding body shape and youth. These pressures can be challenging for women with gynecological issues, leading to feelings of inadequacy. Reference: Grabe, S., Ward, L. M., & Hyde, J. S. (2008). Common Gynecological Conditions Affecting Body Image PCOS: Weight gain, acne, excess hair growth. Endometriosis: Chronic pain, potential infertility. Menopause: Weight gain, changes in skin and hair. Breast and Gynecological Cancers: Surgical scars, hair loss from chemotherapy. Speaker Notes: Conditions like PCOS and menopause impact appearance and self-perception. Women may feel self-conscious due to symptoms like weight gain or acne in PCOS or experience significant changes in their bodies after cancer treatments. Reference: Fassino, S., Pierò, A., Boggio, S., Piccioni, V., & Garzaro, L. (2002). Body Image Issues Across Different Life Stages Adolescence: Menstrual health, body changes. Reproductive Age: Fertility concerns, body after pregnancy. Menopause and Beyond: Body changes, aging concerns. Speaker Notes: Body image challenges vary across life stages. (2007). The effects of gender and family, friend, and media influences on eating behaviors and body image during adolescence. Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 36(8), 1024-1037.
