About This Presentation

Description : Breast Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention: Reduce Your Risk, Take Action
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, but many cases can be prevented or treated successfully if detected early. This presentation, "Breast Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention," explores the critical factors that influence breast cancer risk and highlights actionable steps individuals can take to reduce their chances of developing this disease.
Learn about modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, including lifestyle choices, genetic predisposition (e.g., BRCA mutations), and hormonal influences. Discover how maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, limiting alcohol intake, and avoiding tobacco can significantly lower your risk. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of regular screenings, such as mammograms and clinical breast exams, which are vital for early detection and improved survival rates.
Advanced preventive strategies, such as genetic counseling, chemoprevention, and HPV vaccination, are also covered, offering high-risk individuals additional options to protect their health.
By empowering yourself with knowledge about breast cancer prevention, you can take control of your health and make informed choices that lead to a healthier future. Join us in raising awareness and reducing the global burden of breast cancer through proactive prevention and early detection strategies.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention Understanding Risks and Strategies to Reduce Breast Cancer Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Early identification of risk factors and prevention strategies can significantly reduce incidence rates. Goal: Empower individuals with knowledge to take preventive actions. Speaker Notes: Emphasize the global impact of breast cancer and how prevention plays a crucial role in reducing both mortality and incidence rates. Reference: World Health Organization (WHO). (2021). Breast cancer: Prevention and control.
Slide 3-

Non-Modifiable Risk Factors Age: Risk increases with age, especially after 50. Gender: Women are at significantly higher risk. Family History: Increased risk if a close relative (mother, sister) has had breast cancer. Genetic Mutations: BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations significantly increase risk. Early Menarche or Late Menopause: Longer exposure to estrogen increases risk. Speaker Notes: Explain that while these factors cannot be changed, individuals with high genetic risk can still take preventive measures such as enhanced screening or prophylactic surgery. Reference: National Cancer Institute (NCI). (2021). Risk factors for breast cancer.

Modifiable Risk Factors Lifestyle Choices: Obesity: Especially after menopause, excess body fat increases estrogen levels. Alcohol Consumption: Even moderate drinking increases risk. Physical Inactivity: Lack of regular exercise is associated with higher risk. Hormonal Factors: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after menopause. Use of oral contraceptives. Smoking: Linked to increased risk, especially in younger women. Speaker Notes: Focus on actionable steps individuals can take to reduce their modifiable risks, emphasizing the role of lifestyle choices. Reference: Colditz, G. A., & Wei, E. K. (2012). Preventability of cancer: The relative contributions of biologic and social factors.

The Role of Genetics 5–10% of breast cancers are linked to inherited gene mutations (e.g., BRCA1, BRCA2). Other genetic mutations: PALB2, CHEK2, and TP53. Genetic testing and counseling are essential for high-risk individuals. Preventive strategies for BRCA-positive individuals: Enhanced screening (e.g., MRI). Risk-reducing surgery (mastectomy or oophorectomy). Chemoprevention. Speaker Notes: Explain the importance of genetic counseling and testing for families with a history of breast cancer. Reference: Nelson, H. D., et al. (2019). Risk assessment and genetic testing for BRCA-related cancer.

Healthy Living to Reduce Breast Cancer Risk Maintain a Healthy Weight: Balance calorie intake and physical activity. Regular Physical Activity: At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. Limit Alcohol Consumption: No more than 1 drink per day. Balanced Diet: High in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low in saturated fats. Avoid Tobacco: Reduce risk through smoking cessation programs. Speaker Notes: Stress the importance of building long-term, sustainable healthy habits for prevention. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Recommendations for cancer prevention.
Slide 7-

Vaccinations and Chemoprevention Vaccinations: HPV Vaccine: Reduces risk of HPV-related breast cancers. Chemoprevention: Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) like tamoxifen or raloxifene for high-risk women. Aromatase inhibitors for postmenopausal women at risk. Speaker Notes: Discuss the role of preventive medications for individuals at high risk, guided by their healthcare provider. Reference: Cuzick, J., et al. (2013). Preventive therapy for breast cancer.
Slide 8-

Breast Cancer Screening and Early Detection Mammograms: Recommended starting at age 40 or earlier for high-risk women. Clinical Breast Exams and Self-Exams: Awareness of breast changes. Advanced Screening: MRI or ultrasound for women with dense breast tissue or genetic predisposition. Speaker Notes: Highlight the benefits of routine screenings and how early detection improves survival rates. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Breast cancer early detection guidelines.
Slide 9-

Reducing Environmental Risks Reduce exposure to pesticides and harmful chemicals. Use non-toxic cleaning and cosmetic products. Limit radiation exposure (e.g., unnecessary medical imaging). Speaker Notes: Discuss how reducing exposure to carcinogens can lower overall cancer risk. Reference: International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). (2019). Carcinogens in the environment.

Key Takeaways Understand your risk factors, both modifiable and non-modifiable. Adopt a healthy lifestyle with balanced nutrition and regular physical activity. Participate in recommended screening programs. Consider genetic counseling if you have a family history of breast cancer.
