Metabolism refers to the set of chemical reactions that occur in living organisms to maintain life. These reactions are responsible for breaking down complex molecules into simpler ones, as well as synthesizing complex molecules from simpler ones. Metabolism is essential for the growth, development, and maintenance of cells, tissues, and organs.

There are two main types of metabolism: catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism refers to the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy in the process. Anabolism, on the other hand, refers to the synthesis of complex molecules from simpler ones, requiring energy in the process. Both catabolism and anabolism are necessary for the proper functioning of cells and the entire organism.

Metabolism involves a wide range of chemical reactions, including those that occur in the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as those involved in the production of ATP, the energy currency of cells. These reactions are tightly regulated by enzymes and hormones to maintain a balance between catabolism and anabolism.

Metabolism is influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, diet, exercise, and environmental factors. Disorders of metabolism can lead to a wide range of health problems, including diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Understanding metabolism is crucial for the development of effective treatments for these conditions and for maintaining optimal health.
