What is Gynecologic Oncology? Specialty focused on cancers of the female reproductive system. Common gynecologic cancers include cervical, ovarian, endometrial (uterine), vulvar, and vaginal cancers. Gynecologic oncologists provide comprehensive care, from diagnosis to treatment and palliative care. Speaker Notes: Gynecologic oncology is an essential field dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing cancers affecting women’s reproductive organs. Gynecologic oncologists are specially trained to handle complex cases and support patients throughout their journey. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). What is gynecologic cancer? Types of Gynecologic Cancers Cervical Cancer: Often linked to HPV infection. Ovarian Cancer: Includes epithelial, germ cell, and stromal cell types. Endometrial (Uterine) Cancer: Common in postmenopausal women. Vulvar Cancer: Rare but increasingly prevalent. Vaginal Cancer: Rare, often secondary to HPV infection. Speaker Notes: Gynecologic cancers encompass five main types, each affecting different parts of the reproductive system and presenting unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Reference: World Health Organization. (2020). Cancer Fact Sheets. Retrieved from https://www.who.int/
Slide 5-

Risk Factors for Gynecologic Cancers HPV Infection: Major risk factor for cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. Age: Higher risk for ovarian and endometrial cancers with age. Family History: BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations increase ovarian cancer risk. Obesity: Linked to endometrial cancer. Reproductive History: Late menopause, early menarche, or infertility. Speaker Notes: Risk factors vary across different gynecologic cancers. Some factors, such as HPV infection and genetic mutations, significantly increase cancer risk, while lifestyle factors also play a role. Reference: National Cancer Institute. (2021). HPV and Cancer. Retrieved from https://www.cancer.gov/

Symptoms of Gynecologic Cancers Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge. Pelvic or abdominal pain. Bloating and changes in bowel habits (especially in ovarian cancer). Pain during intercourse. Persistent itching or skin changes (vulvar cancer). Speaker Notes: Recognizing symptoms early can lead to timely diagnosis and better outcomes. However, symptoms like bloating and pain can be vague, so it’s essential for women to have regular gynecologic exams. Reference: American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. (2020). Signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers. Retrieved from https://www.acog.org/

Screening and Early Detection Pap Smear: For cervical cancer, detects abnormal cells. HPV Testing: Identifies high-risk HPV strains linked to cervical cancer. Transvaginal Ultrasound: Used for detecting ovarian and endometrial abnormalities. Endometrial Biopsy: For women with postmenopausal bleeding. Importance of regular screening for early detection. Speaker Notes: Screening plays a vital role in detecting precancerous conditions and early-stage cancers, especially for cervical cancer. Regular screenings allow for timely intervention and improved survival rates. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2021). Cervical Cancer Screening. Retrieved from https://www.cdc.gov/

Treatment Options Surgery: Common for ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancers. Radiation Therapy: Often used for cervical and vulvar cancers. Chemotherapy: Typically for advanced or recurrent cancers. Targeted Therapy: Used for specific types like BRCA-mutated ovarian cancer. Immunotherapy: Emerging option for certain cases. Speaker Notes: Treatment options depend on the type and stage of cancer. Surgery is common for early-stage cancers, while advanced cases may require a combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapies. Reference: American Society of Clinical Oncology. (2021). Types of Cancer Treatment. Retrieved from https://www.cancer.net/

Advances in Gynecologic Oncology Targeted Therapies: PARP inhibitors for BRCA-positive ovarian cancer. Minimally Invasive Surgery: Laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery. Immunotherapy: Use of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Genetic Testing: BRCA and other gene mutations influencing treatment plans. Speaker Notes: Advances in gynecologic oncology have improved outcomes, especially with targeted therapies and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Genetic testing now plays a crucial role in treatment planning. Reference: Ledermann, J., Harter, P., Gourley, C., Friedlander, M., Vergote, I., Rustin, G., ... & Kristensen, G. (2012). Psychosocial Support for Patients Emotional impact of gynecologic cancers. Importance of counseling and support groups. Sexual health and intimacy support. Quality of life and coping strategies. Speaker Notes: Gynecologic cancer patients face unique emotional and social challenges. Providing psychosocial support, including counseling and support groups, is essential for holistic care.
