FecalTransplants

Why would anyone want this? Fecal Microbiota Transplant The intent of fecal transplant is to replace the good bacteria that has been killed off or suppressed. This frequently happens from the use of antibiotics. This results in bad bacteria, specifically Clostridium difficile (C. diff.) to over-populate the patient’s colon. This infection causes C. diff. colitis, giving rise to often incapacitating and sometimes even fatal diarrhea (Fecal Transplant Foundation, 2017).

Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) a process where fecal matter is obtained from a screened donor. It is mixed with saline and implanted in a patient via colonoscopy, endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, enema, NG tube, or orally -via capsules. (Fecal Transplant Foundation, 2017)

A Serious Infection Incidence of C. diff. is on the rise throughout the world – In 2012 the CDC said that more than 340,000 people in the U.S. had C. diff. Of those, at least 14,000 people died. Some opinions are that between 30,000 to 50,000 people die from C. diff. in the U.S. but it is not tracked with C. diff. being the cause of death because the U.S reports differently than the rest of the world! Fecal transplant also shows hopeful results with some other auto-immune diseases and digestive disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. FMT may be a treatment for many other health conditions but more research is needed. (Fecal Transplant Foundation, 2017)

Where Fecal Transplants are Used: At least 900 medical centers are now using FMT for treating patients with C. diff infection There are at least 12 clinical trials testing fecal transplantation uses in ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), and many other disorders (Openbiome, 2017)
Slide 7-

Formats for FMT FMT is available in three forms: For colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or enema For nasoenteric / gastric tube or EGD For oral administration (capsules)

Highly Effective Treatment Fecal Transplant: Low-cost Low-risk Highly effective But…it is not paid for by most insurance companies yet Classified as experimental treatment (Fecal Transplant Foundation, 2017)
