Active Duty Military and Veterans
Slide 2-

Military and Veterans Today there are approximately twenty million veterans and active-duty military members. This population faces unique circumstances that most private citizens never see. They face increased anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, PTSD, suicidal ideation, trauma, addiction and traumatic brain injuries.
Slide 3-

Military / Veterans Depression, anxiety and PTSD prevalence are greatest among those with the most combat exposure (Reed‐Fitzke & Lucier‐Greer, 2020). Mental health disorders are found in at least nine percent and up to thirty percent of active duty and reserve military members (Reed‐Fitzke & Lucier‐Greer, 2020). Seventy-five percent of service members that have been deployed report having trouble sleeping(Rice & Schroeder, 2019). Decreased sleep correlates with increased depression and anxiety along with decreased performance, accuracy and cognitive decline (Rice & Schroeder, 2019).

Treatment Considerations This population needs special consideration because they may have concerns with security clearance. They also are basically broken down in boot camp and taught that they are part of a team and that is the most important thing. They may face strong career repercussions including ending their career if they are found to be unstable so many are apprehensive to open up fully and talk about the extent of their mental health issues.

PTSD PTSD can lead to many of the other mental health issues listed earlier. PTSD in the military population is treated very well with CBT in group therapy.

Personal Triggers My father was in the Korean War My first husband was in the Marine special forces I saw first-hand what these special people went through and the burdens they carried afterward I work in addiction medicine now and see the enormous number of veterans with addiction

Conclusion There are many resources out there for education on the mental health issues our veterans face.
