About This Presentation

Description : Emerging Therapies and Clinical Trials in Breast Oncology
Breast cancer continues to be a major global health concern, affecting millions of women each year. This presentation delves into the cutting-edge advancements transforming breast oncology. It highlights emerging therapies such as targeted treatments, immunotherapy, and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) that are redefining the standards of care.
Targeted therapies focus on molecular abnormalities, offering precision treatment with fewer side effects. Immunotherapy, including checkpoint inhibitors and cancer vaccines, empowers the immune system to fight cancer effectively. ADCs, described as "guided missiles," deliver cytotoxic drugs directly to cancer cells with remarkable accuracy.
Clinical trials remain pivotal in advancing these therapies, validating their safety and efficacy while opening doors to novel treatment approaches like epigenetic modulators and tumor microenvironment modifiers. This presentation emphasizes the importance of patient participation and global collaboration in research.
By exploring the challenges and future directions, the presentation aims to inspire hope and highlight the transformative potential of innovative therapies and clinical trials in improving survival rates and quality of life for breast cancer patients.
Stay informed about the latest developments in breast oncology and join the conversation shaping the future of cancer care.

Emerging Therapies and Clinical Trials in Breast Oncology Advancing the Frontiers of Treatment and Care Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Why Focus on Emerging Therapies? Breast cancer remains the most common cancer in women globally. Limitations of current treatments (e.g., resistance, side effects). Need for personalized and targeted therapies. Clinical trials play a crucial role in validating new approaches. Speaker’s Note: Emerging therapies and clinical trials address the gaps in traditional treatment approaches, bringing hope for better outcomes and quality of life.

Targeted Therapy: A Precision Approach HER2 Inhibitors: Trastuzumab, Pertuzumab. Emerging: Trastuzumab Deruxtecan (DESTINY trials). PARP Inhibitors: Olaparib, Talazoparib. Effective in BRCA-mutated cancers. PI3K Inhibitors: Alpelisib for PIK3CA-mutated cases. Speaker’s Note: Targeted therapies act on specific molecular pathways involved in breast cancer, improving efficacy and minimizing systemic side effects. Reference: Modi, S., et al. (2020). Trastuzumab Deruxtecan in HER2-Positive Breast Cancer. New England Journal of Medicine. Robson, M., et al. (2017). Olaparib for Metastatic Breast Cancer in Patients with a Germline BRCA Mutation. NEJM.

Immunotherapy: Boosting the Body’s Defenses Checkpoint Inhibitors: PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors (Atezolizumab, Pembrolizumab). Approved for TNBC (IMpassion130 trial). Cancer Vaccines: Vaccines targeting MUC1, HER2. Early-stage trials show promise. Adoptive Cell Therapy: CAR-T therapy for HER2-positive breast cancer. Speaker’s Note: Immunotherapy is transforming oncology by leveraging the patient’s immune system to combat cancer. The IMpassion130 trial has shown significant improvement in progression-free survival in triple-negative breast cancer. Schmid, P., et al. (2020). Atezolizumab and Nab-Paclitaxel in Advanced Triple-Negative Breast Cancer. NEJM.

Antibody-Drug Conjugates: Guided Missiles in Oncology Mechanism: Target-specific antibodies linked to cytotoxic drugs. Key ADCs: Trastuzumab Deruxtecan (HER2). Sacituzumab Govitecan (TNBC). Benefits: Precision delivery, reduced off-target effects. Speaker’s Note: ADCs deliver cytotoxic agents directly to cancer cells, significantly reducing collateral damage to healthy tissues. Reference: Modi, S., et al. (2020). Trastuzumab Deruxtecan. NEJM.

Emerging Therapies in the Pipeline Biosimilars: Cost-effective alternatives to biologics. Epigenetic Modulators: Drugs targeting gene expression pathways. Tumor Microenvironment Modifiers: Drugs disrupting cancer cell support systems. Speaker’s Note: These innovative approaches address the evolving understanding of cancer biology, promising significant breakthroughs. Reference: ClinicalTrials.gov - Pipeline studies in breast oncology.

Role of Clinical Trials Phases of Clinical Trials: From safety (Phase I) to efficacy (Phase III). Examples: IMpassion130 (Atezolizumab). OlympiAD (Olaparib). Importance of patient participation and global collaboration. Speaker’s Note: Clinical trials are the backbone of medical innovation, translating lab discoveries into real-world solutions. Reference: National Cancer Institute, ClinicalTrials.gov.

Overcoming Barriers and Charting the Future Challenges: Patient recruitment and retention. High costs of innovative therapies. Future Trends: Artificial intelligence in trial design. Personalized vaccines and therapies. Wider adoption of biosimilars. Speaker’s Note: The path forward involves addressing current barriers while leveraging technology and collaboration for breakthroughs.
Slide 9-

Conclusions: Towards a Brighter Future in Breast Oncology Significant progress in treatment modalities. Role of collaboration in clinical trials. Emerging therapies provide hope for patients and caregivers. Speaker’s Note: Emerging therapies and clinical trials are not just about science; they are about improving lives and inspiring hope.
