Evolution of Imaging in Radiation Therapy 1980s: CT-based treatment planning replaced conventional X-rays. 2000s: Integration of MRI and PET for functional imaging. Present: Real-time imaging with Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). Speaker Notes: Provide an overview of how imaging technologies have evolved over time, enabling greater precision and flexibility. Reference: DeVita, V. T., et al. (2019). Key Imaging Modalities in Radiation Therapy CT (Computed Tomography): Primary tool for treatment planning. Provides high-resolution anatomical details. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Superior soft tissue contrast for tumors near critical structures. Functional MRI (fMRI) for assessing tumor activity. PET (Positron Emission Tomography): Detects metabolic activity and tumor aggressiveness. PET-CT combines functional and anatomical imaging. Ultrasound: Used in real-time imaging during brachytherapy. Speaker Notes: Explain how each imaging modality contributes to different aspects of radiation therapy planning and delivery. Reference: McGarry, C. K., et al. (2017). The role of imaging in radiation therapy. Clinical Oncology.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) Combines real-time imaging with radiation delivery. Corrects for patient movement and tumor shifts during treatment. Examples of IGRT technologies: Cone-beam CT (CBCT) 4D imaging for respiratory motion management Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT). Speaker Notes: Highlight the importance of IGRT in minimizing errors caused by patient motion or tumor changes during therapy. Reference: Jaffray, D. A. (2012).
