What is an Ectopic Pregnancy? Complication of pregnancy in which the embryo attaches outside the uterus. Occurs mostly in the Fallopian tubes, cervix, ovaries, or within the abdomen. Rate of 1 or 2% in developed countries Most common complication is rupture with internal bleeding Most common cause of death among women during the first trimester (10%)

Signs, Symptoms, Risk Factors & Diagnosis Signs and symptoms: Abdominal pain (generally described as sharp, dull, or cramp-like) Abnormal vaginal bleeding (can often cause tachycardia, fainting or shock) Cervical or adnexal tenderness Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting Risk Factors Maternal age of 35-44 years History of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (usually caused by a chlamydia infection) Tobacco smoking History of infertility Use of assisted reproductive technology Diagnosis Blood tests for human chorionic gonodotropin (hCG) Vaginal ultrasonography

Treatment The patient was cannulated with 1000 cc ringer lactate salt at 36 drops per minute. Because of presence of vaginal bleeding, surgical intervention is necessary. Surgeons use laparoscopy to gain access to the pelvis and remove the pregnancy Salpingostomy: if the tube has not been damaged, only the pregnancy is removed Salpingectomy: if the tube has been ruptured, both the pregnancy and tube are removed
