Our body’s mechanism to stop bleeding Clotting of blood. Cut ends of a blood vessel will contract. Blood pressure will drop if bleeding is severe.

PRINCIPLES OF CONTROLLING BLEEDING Direct pressure Compress or cover the wound with a sterile dressing to control blood loss. IMPORTANT: ALWAYS wear gloves to avoid direct contact with blood

Indirect pressure Apply pressure at pulse such as brachial and femoral to stop severe bleeding at the distal sites. Release the pressure every 10 minutes to avoid ischemia to the distal tissues. For severe bleeding not controlled with direct pressure. Only for trained First Aiders.

Pressure point Is the place where you can compress an important artery against an underlying bone to flatten it and prevent the flow of blood beyond that point.

Elevate the wound Raise the wound to a level higher than the heart Bandage it in place firmly, but not so tightly as to impede the circulation. If bleeding seeps through the dressing, bandage another firmly over the top IMPORTANT: DO NOT apply “tourniquet”. It will worsen the bleeding and may cause damage to tissue and gangrene

TYPES OF WOUND Incised wound Clean cut from a sharp edge such as broken glass, knife, etc. Profuse bleeding

TYPES OF WOUND Laceration Crushing or ripping forces result in rough tears. Bleed less profusely than clean-cuts but have more tissue damage and bruising. Easily contaminated by germs and high risk of infection

TYPE OF WOUND Abrasion (graze) Superficial wound in which the top layers of skin are scrape off, leaving a raw, tender area. Caused by sliding fall or a friction burn

TYPE OF WOUND Contusion (bruise) Blunt blow or punch can rupture capillaries beneath the skin. Bluish discoloration.

TYPE OF WOUND Puncture wound An injury such as standing on a nail or being pricked by needle. Entry small but deep track of internal damage. Germs and dirt can enter into the body easily

TYPE OF WOUND Gunshot wound A bullet or other missile may drive into the body causing serious internal injury and contaminants from the air. Entry site is small but the exit maybe large and ragged

Management of Wounds With Slight Bleeding If possible, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before dealing with the wound and wear gloves. Rinse wound lightly with running water, if available, until it is clean. Dab gently to dry.

Management of Wounds With Slight Bleeding If there is bleeding apply direct pressure and elevate and support injured part. Pat dry and dress wound with an adhesive dressing.

MANAGEMENT OF SEVERE WOUND Put on disposable gloves if available Apply direct pressure over the wound with your finger or palm preferably with a sterile dressing or pad. Raise and support the injured limb above the level of the heart to reduce blood loss. Lay the casualty down and protect from cold. If in shock raise the leg of the casualty

MANAGEMENT OF SEVERE WOUND Secure the dressing with a bandage that is tight enough to maintain pressure but not so tight that it impairs the circulation. If Blood seeps through, apply fresh one over it and support injured part with a sling or bandage. Seek medical aid. Frequent check of vital signs and treat for shock of necessary.

TREATMENT OF AMPUTATION Control blood loss (Do not use a tourniquet). Apply sterile dressing or non-fluffy clean pad secured with a bandage. Treat for shock. Call for an Ambulance.

TREATMENT OF AMPUTATED PART Wrap the amputated part in plastic bag. Wrap again in gauze or soft fabric. Place the package in another plastic bag filled with crushed ice. Mark package - name and time. Send amputated part together with the casualty to the hospital.
