About This Presentation

Description : Types of Skin Cancer: Know the Risks and Prevention
Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, with various types that differ in severity and treatment. Understanding these types is crucial for early detection and prevention. The three primary forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma.
BCC is the most common and least aggressive type, appearing as pearly bumps or pink patches on sun-exposed areas. SCC is slightly more aggressive, presenting as red, scaly patches or wart-like growths, often on the ears, hands, or lips. Melanoma, although less common, is the most dangerous, characterized by irregular moles or dark lesions. It accounts for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths.
Rare skin cancers like Merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, and sebaceous carcinoma are less frequent but demand specialized care due to their aggressive nature.
Prevention includes avoiding excessive sun exposure, using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and performing regular skin self-exams. Early diagnosis greatly improves treatment outcomes.
This presentation provides insights into each skin cancer type, their symptoms, and prevention strategies, emphasizing the importance of proactive care to reduce risk and improve overall skin health.

Types of Skin Cancer Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist Understanding the Most Common and Rare Forms of Skin Cancer
Slide 2-

Skin Cancer: An Overview Skin cancer arises from the uncontrolled growth of skin cells. Three main types: Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Accounts for more than 40% of all cancer cases globally. Speaker's Note: While non-melanoma skin cancers are more common, melanoma is significantly more aggressive. Understanding the differences is critical for prevention and treatment. Reference: World Health Organization (WHO). Skin Cancer Fact Sheet.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The Most Common Type Originates in the basal cells of the epidermis. Accounts for ~80% of all skin cancers. Characteristics: Appears as pearly, flesh-colored bumps or pink patches. Common on sun-exposed areas like the face and neck. Risk Factors: Chronic UV exposure, fair skin. Treatment: Mohs surgery, cryotherapy, topical medications. Speaker's Note: BCC rarely metastasizes but can cause significant local damage if left untreated. Sun protection is key to prevention. Reference: Skin Cancer Foundation. Basal Cell Carcinoma Overview.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): A Common Non-Melanoma Cancer Arises from squamous cells in the epidermis. Accounts for ~16% of skin cancers. Characteristics: Red, scaly patches, open sores, or wart-like growths. Often on sun-exposed areas like the ears, hands, and lips. Risk Factors: UV radiation, chronic inflammation, HPV. Treatment: Surgery, radiation, topical therapies. Speaker's Note: SCC has a higher likelihood of metastasis than BCC, emphasizing the importance of early detection and treatment. Reference: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Squamous Cell Carcinoma Facts.

Melanoma: The Most Aggressive Form of Skin Cancer Arises from melanocytes (pigment-producing cells). Accounts for ~4% of skin cancer cases but causes ~75% of skin cancer deaths. Characteristics: Brown or black irregular moles (ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving). Can occur on any part of the body, even non-sun-exposed areas. Risk Factors: UV exposure, fair skin, family history, genetic mutations. Treatment: Surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy. Speaker's Note: Melanoma's aggressive nature makes early detection critical. Familiarity with the ABCDE rule can save lives. Reference: National Cancer Institute. Melanoma Skin Cancer Overview.

Other Rare Types of Skin Cancer Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC): Rare and aggressive. Appears as firm, painless nodules. Linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus. Kaposi’s Sarcoma: Common in immunocompromised individuals (e.g., HIV/AIDS). Purple or red patches on skin or mucous membranes. Sebaceous Carcinoma: Arises from sebaceous (oil) glands. Commonly found on eyelids. Speaker's Note: While less common, these rare skin cancers require specialized approaches for diagnosis and management. Reference: Mayo Clinic. Rare Skin Cancers.

Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+). Wear protective clothing and sunglasses. Regular skin self-exams and dermatologist check-ups. Speaker's Note: Preventing skin cancer begins with simple lifestyle changes and regular monitoring for skin abnormalities. Reference: World Cancer Research Fund. Skin Cancer Prevention Guidelines.

Conclusions - Prevention is Power Skin cancer is preventable and treatable with early detection. Know the signs of BCC, SCC, and melanoma. Protect your skin and prioritize regular check-ups. Speaker's Note: Awareness, early detection, and prevention can significantly reduce the burden of skin cancer. Let’s take proactive steps to safeguard our health. Reference: American Cancer Society.
