About This Presentation

Description : Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Combining Oncology with Restoration
Oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery represents a transformative approach in cancer care, merging oncologic treatment with aesthetic and functional restoration. By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery, this advanced field significantly improves patient outcomes and quality of life.
This presentation, "Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery," explores how surgical techniques are used to remove cancer while preserving or enhancing appearance and function. Key areas of focus include breast oncoplastic surgery, such as lumpectomy with tissue rearrangement, and reconstruction using autologous flaps like the DIEP or TRAM flap. Techniques for head and neck reconstruction, including microvascular free flaps, and limb-salvage surgeries for sarcoma patients are also discussed.
Additionally, we explore the benefits of these procedures, including improved cosmetic outcomes, enhanced psychological recovery, and functional preservation. Advances in 3D printing, robotic surgery, and regenerative medicine are highlighted, showcasing how innovation is shaping the future of oncoplastic care.
This presentation is ideal for medical professionals, students, and anyone interested in cutting-edge cancer care. By integrating oncological safety with restoration, oncoplastic surgery sets a new standard for patient-centered treatment.
Discover how these techniques are revolutionizing cancer surgery and improving lives.

Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery Combining Oncology and Aesthetics for Better Outcomes in Cancer Treatment Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery? Combines cancer removal surgery with reconstructive techniques to preserve form and function. Aims to achieve oncological safety while optimizing cosmetic and functional outcomes. Commonly used in breast, head and neck, and sarcoma surgeries. Speaker Notes: Oncoplastic surgery bridges the gap between cancer removal and aesthetics, addressing both physical and emotional aspects of recovery. Reference: Clough, K. B., Kaufman, G. J., Nos, C., Buccimazza, I., & Sarfati, I. M. (2010). Improving breast cancer surgery: A classification and quadrant per quadrant atlas for oncoplastic surgery. Objectives of Oncoplastic Surgery Complete oncologic resection with clear margins. Restore or improve physical appearance. Enhance psychological well-being and quality of life. Reduce postoperative complications like deformities or functional impairments. Reference: Losken, A., & Fishman, I. (2014). Oncoplastic breast reconstruction: Past, present, and future directions. Types of Oncoplastic Surgery Breast-Conserving Surgery with Reconstruction: Volume displacement techniques (e.g., tissue rearrangement). Volume replacement techniques (e.g., tissue flaps). Total Reconstruction after Mastectomy: Implant-based reconstruction. Autologous tissue reconstruction (e.g., DIEP flap, TRAM flap). Reconstruction in Head and Neck Cancers: Free flaps (e.g., fibula flap for jaw reconstruction). Reconstruction in Sarcoma Surgery: Limb salvage techniques using muscle and skin grafts. Speaker Notes: Different cancers and surgical challenges require tailored reconstructive approaches to achieve the best outcomes. Reference: Rietjens, M., Urban, C. A., Rey, P. C., & Petit, J. Y. (2006). Oncoplastic breast surgery: The new frontier of surgical oncology. The Breast Journal, 12(S2), S14-S19.

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery Techniques Volume Displacement: Local tissue rearrangement after lumpectomy. Quadrant-specific oncoplastic techniques. Volume Replacement: Flap reconstruction (e.g., latissimus dorsi flap, DIEP flap). Fat grafting for contour correction. Speaker Notes: Breast reconstruction after oncological surgery is critical for improving patient confidence and body image. Reference: Clough, K. B., Lewis, J. S., Couturaud, B., Fitoussi, A., Nos, C., & Falcou, M. C. (2003). Oncoplastic techniques allow extensive resections for breast-conserving therapy of breast carcinomas. Annals of Surgery, 237(1), 26.

Reconstructive Surgery in Head and Neck Cancer Microvascular free flaps (e.g., fibula flap for jaw reconstruction). Local flaps for small defects (e.g., pectoralis major flap). Composite flaps for larger defects combining muscle, bone, and skin. Reference: Brown, J. S., & Barry, C. (2008). Reconstruction of the mandible following resection for cancer. Benefits of Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery Improved cosmetic outcomes and body image. Enhanced psychological recovery. Maintenance of functional abilities (e.g., limb movement, speech). Reduced risk of surgical deformities and complications. Reference: Losken, A., & Hamdi, M. (2013). Partial breast reconstruction: Current perspectives.
