Introduction to Postpartum Mental Health Postpartum period is a critical time for a mother’s mental and emotional health. Mental health conditions affect 10-20% of women after childbirth. Early identification and support are essential for healthy outcomes. Speaker Notes: Postpartum mental health is often overlooked despite its significant impact on the mother's well-being and child development. Understanding and addressing it can improve quality of life for both mother and baby. Reference: Gavin, N. I., Gaynes, B. N., Lohr, K. N., Meltzer-Brody, S., Gartlehner, G., & Swinson, T. (2005). Perinatal depression: A systematic review of prevalence and incidence. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 106(5, Part 1), 1071-1083.

Common Types of Postpartum Mental Health Disorders Baby Blues: Temporary mood swings, anxiety, and sadness. Postpartum Depression (PPD): Persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue. Postpartum Anxiety: Excessive worry, intrusive thoughts, physical symptoms. Postpartum Psychosis: Rare, severe condition with hallucinations and delusions. Speaker Notes: Postpartum mental health issues vary in severity and type. While baby blues are common and mild, conditions like postpartum psychosis require immediate intervention. Reference: O'Hara, M. W., & McCabe, J. E. (2013). Postpartum depression: Current status and future directions. Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, 9, 379-407.

Risk Factors for Postpartum Mental Health Disorders History of mental health disorders. Lack of social support. Complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Hormonal changes and sleep deprivation. Stress from new parental responsibilities. Speaker Notes: Several risk factors contribute to postpartum mental health issues, ranging from biological factors like hormonal shifts to social aspects like support systems. Reference: Beck, C. T. (2001). Predictors of postpartum depression: An update. Nursing Research, 50(5), 275-285.

Symptoms of Postpartum Depression Persistent sadness or “empty” feeling. Difficulty bonding with the baby. Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or inadequacy. Changes in sleep and appetite. Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Speaker Notes: Recognizing these symptoms early is crucial for intervention. Many mothers may hesitate to discuss their feelings, fearing judgment or misunderstanding. Reference: Dennis, C. L., & Dowswell, T. (2013). Psychosocial and psychological interventions for preventing postpartum depression. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Screening and Diagnosis Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS): A common screening tool. Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS). Importance of screening at postpartum check-ups. Partner and family involvement in identifying symptoms. Speaker Notes: Screening tools like EPDS can help identify postpartum depression early. Regular screening at postpartum check-ups, combined with family awareness, is essential for early intervention. Reference: Cox, J. L., Holden, J. M., & Sagovsky, R. (1987). Detection of postnatal depression: Development of the 10-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The British Journal of Psychiatry, 150(6), 782-786.

Treatment and Support Options Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy. Medication: Antidepressants (when necessary, with caution if breastfeeding). Social Support: Family, friends, support groups. Self-Care: Rest, nutrition, exercise, mindfulness practices. Speaker Notes: Treatment often involves a combination of therapy, medication, and support. Encouraging mothers to prioritize self-care is also critical in managing symptoms. Reference: Yonkers, K.
