Introduction to STIs Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections transmitted primarily through sexual contact. STIs can affect the genital tract, reproductive organs, and other body systems. Importance of awareness and early diagnosis to prevent complications. Reference: World Health Organization. "Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)." WHO, 2021.

Common STIs in Gynecology Chlamydia Gonorrhea Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Genital Herpes (HSV) Syphilis Trichomoniasis Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "STDs Overview." CDC, 2021.
Slide 5-

Chlamydia Causative Agent: Chlamydia trachomatis. Symptoms: Often asymptomatic; can cause abnormal vaginal discharge, pain during urination, pelvic pain. Complications: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), infertility if untreated. Diagnosis: Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAAT). Treatment: Antibiotics (azithromycin or doxycycline). Reference: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. "Screening for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: Recommendation Statement." JAMA, 2021.
Slide 6-

Gonorrhea Causative Agent: Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Symptoms: Often asymptomatic; symptoms may include vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, and pain during urination. Complications: PID, infertility, increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. Diagnosis: NAAT, culture in symptomatic cases. Treatment: Dual therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Reference: Workowski, K. A., & Bolan, G. A. "Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines." MMWR, 2021.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Causative Agent: Human papillomavirus (various strains). Symptoms: Genital warts (low-risk strains), typically asymptomatic in high-risk strains. Complications: Cervical cancer, other anogenital cancers (linked to high-risk strains). Prevention: HPV vaccine (recommended for both males and females). Screening: Pap smear, HPV DNA testing. Reference: National Cancer Institute. "HPV and Cancer." NCI, 2021.
Slide 8-

Genital Herpes (HSV) Causative Agent: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Symptoms: Painful blisters or sores in genital area, flu-like symptoms during outbreaks. Transmission: Skin-to-skin contact, can occur even when sores are not visible. Diagnosis: Viral culture, PCR, blood tests for HSV antibodies. Treatment: Antiviral medications (acyclovir, valacyclovir) for managing outbreaks. Reference: World Health Organization. "Herpes Simplex Virus." WHO, 2020.
Slide 9-

Syphilis Causative Agent: Treponema pallidum. Stages: Primary (ulcers), secondary (rash, mucous patches), latent, and tertiary (organ damage). Symptoms: Initial painless sore (chancre), followed by rash and systemic symptoms. Diagnosis: Serological tests (RPR, VDRL). Treatment: Penicillin G, typically given as an injection. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Syphilis - CDC Fact Sheet." CDC, 2021.
Slide 10-

Trichomoniasis Causative Agent: Trichomonas vaginalis (protozoan parasite). Symptoms: Vaginal discharge, itching, painful urination. Complications: Increases susceptibility to other STIs. Diagnosis: Microscopy, NAAT. Treatment: Metronidazole or tinidazole. Reference: Mayo Clinic. "Trichomoniasis - Symptoms and Causes." Mayo Clinic, 2021.
Slide 11-

Complications of Untreated STIs Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Infertility and ectopic pregnancies Increased risk of HIV infection Pregnancy complications (miscarriage, preterm birth) Cancer (e.g., cervical cancer linked to HPV) Reference: World Health Organization. "Sexually Transmitted Infections: Key Facts." WHO, 2021.
Slide 12-

Preventive Measures Vaccination: HPV vaccine to prevent HPV-related cancers. Barrier Methods: Condom use for protection. Regular Screening: Annual screenings for sexually active individuals. Education and Counseling: Importance of sexual health education and risk awareness. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Sexually Transmitted Infections Prevention." CDC, 2021.
Slide 13-

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment Early diagnosis and treatment prevent complications and reduce transmission. Encourages individuals to seek routine screenings and adopt safer practices. Counseling and partner notification to help contain spread. Reference: Workowski, K. A., & Bolan, G. A. "Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines." MMWR, 2021.
