Introduction to Postpartum Care Postpartum period: Begins immediately after birth and typically lasts for 6-8 weeks. Importance of postpartum care: Physical recovery, emotional support, and newborn care. Goal: Promote the health and well-being of both mother and baby. Speaker Notes: The postpartum period is a critical time for both mothers and newborns. Proper care during this time can help manage recovery, prevent complications, and establish a strong foundation for the mother and child’s health. Reference: World Health Organization (WHO). (2013). Postnatal care for mothers and newborns: Highlights from the WHO 2013 guidelines.

Physical Recovery for the Mother Uterine involution: Shrinking of the uterus to pre-pregnancy size. Lochia: Vaginal discharge lasting several weeks postpartum. Pain management: Managing perineal discomfort and cesarean wound healing. Fatigue and rest needs. Speaker Notes: Physical recovery focuses on changes that happen to a mother’s body as it returns to its pre-pregnancy state. Uterine involution, lochia, and pain management are central to this phase, along with sufficient rest to combat fatigue. Reference: Cunningham, F. G., Leveno, K. J., Bloom, S. L., et al. (2018). Williams Obstetrics, 25th Edition. McGraw-Hill Education.

Postpartum Checkups and Assessments Schedule: Typically 6 weeks postpartum for vaginal delivery, sooner for cesarean. Vital checks: Blood pressure, temperature, and signs of infection. Assessment of healing: Perineal and cesarean incision evaluation. Screening for postpartum depression. Speaker Notes: Postpartum checkups assess the mother’s physical and mental recovery. This includes checking for signs of infection, incision healing, and mental health screening to catch any signs of postpartum depression early. Breastfeeding and Lactation Support Benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby. Techniques: Proper latch, positioning, and feeding frequency. Addressing common issues: Engorgement, mastitis, and nipple soreness. Importance of lactation support and resources. Speaker Notes: Breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits but can be challenging. Providing proper guidance on latch and feeding techniques, as well as support for common issues, is essential. Mental Health and Emotional Well-being Common conditions: Baby blues, postpartum depression (PPD), and anxiety. Risk factors: Hormonal changes, lack of sleep, prior mental health history. Screening: Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and other tools. Resources: Counseling, support groups, and mental health professionals. Speaker Notes: Mental health is a critical aspect of postpartum care. While baby blues are common, more severe conditions like PPD require attention. Screening and support systems are key to managing these conditions. Reference: Dennis, C. L., & Dowswell, T. (2013). Psychosocial and psychological interventions for preventing postpartum depression. Educating mothers and families on warning signs and when to seek help is crucial. Reference: Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). (2016).
