About This Presentation

Description : Explore this comprehensive presentation on Gynecological Cancer Screening and Prevention: Endometrial (Uterine) Cancer. This resource provides essential insights into one of the most common gynecological cancers, focusing on risk factors, symptoms, screening, and prevention methods. Endometrial cancer, originating in the lining of the uterus, predominantly affects postmenopausal women. Early detection is crucial, as early-stage diagnosis leads to a high survival rate.
This presentation outlines the key risk factors for endometrial cancer, including prolonged estrogen exposure, obesity, and genetic predispositions such as Lynch syndrome. You’ll also learn about common symptoms, such as abnormal uterine bleeding, that should prompt further investigation. While there is no standardized screening for average-risk women, high-risk groups, especially those with a family history, are encouraged to undergo regular check-ups.
The presentation covers diagnostic tools like transvaginal ultrasound and endometrial biopsy, along with treatment options that range from surgery to hormone therapy. It concludes with prevention strategies, including lifestyle modifications and the role of hormonal contraceptives in reducing risk. With clear visuals and expert-backed information, this resource is ideal for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals interested in women’s health and cancer prevention.

Introduction to Endometrial Cancer Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in developed countries. It originates from the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium. Early detection and prevention are crucial for effective treatment. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). About Endometrial Cancer.
Slide 4-

Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Incidence: Approximately 66,570 new cases diagnosed in the United States annually. Mortality: About 12,940 deaths each year. Age Factor: Primarily affects postmenopausal women. Reference: Siegel, R. L., Miller, K. D., & Jemal, A. (2021). Cancer statistics, 2021. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, 71(1), 7-33.
Slide 5-

Symptoms of Endometrial Cancer Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: The most common symptom, especially postmenopausal bleeding. Pelvic Pain: Less common, may occur in advanced stages. Unexplained Weight Loss: A general cancer warning sign. Other Symptoms: Pain during intercourse, fatigue. Reference: American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), Practice Bulletin No. 149.

Screening Guidelines for Endometrial Cancer Currently, there are no formal screening guidelines for asymptomatic women. High-Risk Groups: Women with Lynch syndrome are recommended for regular screening (endometrial biopsy) starting in their 30s. Postmenopausal Women: Any postmenopausal bleeding should be evaluated immediately. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). (2021). NCCN Guidelines for Uterine Neoplasms.
Slide 7-

Diagnostic Tools for Endometrial Cancer Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS): Measures endometrial thickness; thickened endometrium can indicate abnormality. Endometrial Biopsy: Gold standard for diagnosis. Hysteroscopy: Visual inspection of the uterine cavity. Dilation and Curettage (D&C): If biopsy results are inconclusive. Reference: Smith-Bindman, R., et al. (1998). Predictors of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer among women with abnormal bleeding. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 91(4), 623-630.
Slide 8-

Prevention of Endometrial Cancer Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce estrogen levels. Hormonal Therapy: Use of combined oral contraceptives can reduce risk. Regular Exercise: Associated with a reduced risk of endometrial cancer. Screening for High-Risk Individuals: Genetic counseling and screening for those with family history or Lynch syndrome. Reference: Cummings, S. R., et al. (2009). Preventive health care for postmenopausal women. Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
Slide 9-

Treatment Options for Endometrial Cancer Surgical Treatment: Hysterectomy is the primary treatment, often with removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes. Radiation Therapy: Used for high-risk patients or those not suitable for surgery. Hormonal Therapy: For advanced cases in postmenopausal women. Chemotherapy: Generally for advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Reference: Creasman, W. T. (2017). Endometrial cancer: Clinical features, diagnosis, and staging. American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 217(5), 593-596.
Slide 10-

Importance of Early Detection Early-stage detection of endometrial cancer has a high survival rate (over 90% for Stage I). Early detection allows for simpler, more effective treatments. Awareness of symptoms (e.g., postmenopausal bleeding) leads to earlier diagnosis. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Survival rates for endometrial cancer.
Slide 11-

Educating Patients on Endometrial Cancer Awareness Encourage patients to report any abnormal uterine bleeding. Discuss healthy lifestyle habits and weight management with patients. Promote awareness of family history and genetic risk factors. Reference: Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO). (2021). Patient education resources.

Key Takeaways
Slide 13-

Endometrial cancer is common but highly treatable if detected early. Awareness of symptoms like postmenopausal bleeding is crucial. Preventive strategies such as weight management, exercise, and use of combined contraceptives can reduce risk.
