This medical PowerPoint presentation is about neurotransmission, the process by which nerve cells, or neurons, communicate with one another. Neurons communicate through the release and reception of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters, which are released from the axon terminal of one neuron and bind to specific receptors on the dendrites or cell body of another neuron.

The release of neurotransmitters is triggered by an action potential, an electrical signal that travels down the axon of the neuron. When the action potential reaches the axon terminal, it causes the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small space between the axon terminal and the dendrites or cell body of the next neuron.

Once the neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft, they bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. This binding causes a change in the postsynaptic neurons membrane potential, either making it more or less likely to fire an action potential.

After the neurotransmitter has served its purpose, it is either taken back up into the presynaptic neuron or broken down by enzymes in the synaptic cleft. This process is known as reuptake or degradation, respectively.

Neurotransmission plays a crucial role in many aspects of brain function, including cognition, emotion, and behavior. Dysfunction in neurotransmission has been implicated in a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and Parkinsons disease.
