Anatomy & Physiology of the Spine and Related Neurological Diseases With Nursing Management
Slide 2-

Anatomy of the Spine • 33 vertebrae: cervical (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacral (5 fused), coccygeal (4 fused) • Intervertebral discs: cushion and absorb shock • Spinal cord runs through vertebral canal • Provides structural support and protects the spinal cord
Slide 3-

Physiology of the Spine • Supports body weight and posture • Protects spinal cord and nerves • Facilitates flexible movement • Neural transmission: carries sensory and motor signals between brain and body
Slide 4-

Neurological Diseases Related to the Spine • Herniated Disc – nerve compression causing pain/numbness • Spinal Stenosis – narrowing of spinal canal • Spinal Cord Injury – loss of motor/sensory function • Multiple Sclerosis – demyelination affecting spinal pathways
Slide 5-

Nursing Management • Pain management: analgesics, positioning, relaxation • Monitor neurological status: sensation, motor strength • Prevent complications: pressure ulcers, DVT, infections • Patient education: safe mobility, lifestyle modifications • Rehabilitation support: physical therapy, assistive devices
