About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Introduction to Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine".
This medical PowerPoint presentation talks about Pharmacogenomics, the study of how genetic variations influence an individuals response to drugs. It involves the analysis of the interplay between a persons genetics and the drugs they take. By studying how genetic variations affect drug metabolism, efficacy, and toxicity, pharmacogenomics can help healthcare professionals tailor treatment plans to each patients individual needs.

Slide 1-

Introduction to Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine By: Mai Mehanna, MS, BCPS
Slide 2-

Interindividual Variability of Drug Responses Variability in treatment response to medications (Efficacy) Variability in adverse effects in response to medications (Toxicity)
Slide 3-

Sources of Variation in Response Variability in Drug Response Age Disease States Environmental Factors Drug Interactions Pregnancy Obesity Gender Adherence Genetic Differences Race Pharmacogenomics
Slide 4-

How Genetic Variations affect Drug’s Response Genetic variations can affect either the drug’s pharmacokinetics (PK) or the pharmacodynamics (PD)
Slide 5-

Pharmacogenetics vs. Pharmacogenomics Pharmacogenetics: SINGLE gene Pharmacogenomics: MULTIPLE genes
Slide 6-

PharmacogeneticsHistorical Perspective First complete report of an inherited difference in response to a xenobiotic in 1932 Primaquine (antimalarial drug)-induced hemolysis in some soldiers during the world war II
Slide 7-

PharmacogeneticsHistorical Perspective
Slide 8-

PharmacogeneticsHistorical Perspective The term ‘Pharmacogenetics’ was coined as ‘the inherited difference in drug response’ by Freidrich Vogel, Germany – 1959
Slide 9-

PharmacogeneticsHistorical Perspective 1970’s-1990s: many drug-gene interactions have been studied and investigated The development of pharmacogenetics over the years ‘Pharmacogenomics’ & the emergence of the Human Genome Project
Slide 10-

Human Genome Project(1990-2003) The world’s largest collaborative biological project, costed about $3-billion 20 universities and research centers around the world Goals determining the sequence of the human DNA and identifying all of the genes (structure, function)
Slide 11-

Genomic Achievements since the Human Genome Project 2005 First FDA approval of a pharmacogenetic test 2006 First direct-to-consumer whole-genome test 2007 the FDA started to recognize the importance of pharmacogenomics, issued black box warnings, incorporated genotype-guided dosing algorithms, and included pharmacogenomic information in drug labeling 2008 Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) passed in U.S
Slide 12-

Published Genome-Wide Association Reports, 2005-2013
Slide 13-

Personalized Medicine Precision Medicine, Individualized Therapy, Stratified Medicine Definition
Slide 14-

Traditional vs. Personalized Treatment
Slide 15-

Potential Benefits of Personalized Medicine Improve drug’s efficacy Decrease drug’s adverse events Savings: time, money, illness

Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI)2015
Slide 18-

Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI)2015 $ 215 investment in the NIH, FDA, and the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Aim understand how a person’s genetics, environment, and lifestyle can help determine the best approach to prevent or treat disease Goals: Short-term expanding precision medicine in the area of cancer research Long-term bringing precision medicine to all areas of healthcare on a large scale
