Introduction -Chronic diseases are rising. 1) -Fructose is said to be responsible. 2) -Many studies use HFCS to investigate the effects of fructose on human health. -How does fruit sugar from fresh fruit affect our health? Johnson, Richard J., et al. "Potential role of sugar (fructose) in the epidemic of hypertension, obesity and the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease." Monosaccharides Poly- or Disaccharides Simple sugar, such as fructose, glucose or galactose. Cannot be broken down into simpler molecules. Complex sugars, which are fiber and starch. They consists of several sugar bonds. 3) Fructose is a monosaccharide. Fructose occurs naturally in fruit, vegetables and honey. The body metabolizes glucose and fructose differently. While all cell in your body can use glucose for energy, only the liver has to convert fructose into glucose. 4) 3)PERCIVAL, ELIZABETH. "The monosaccharides." Comprehensive Biochemistry. Vol. 5. How Does Fructose From Fresh Fruit Differ From Industrial Sugars? -Low sugar content in fruit and high fiber -Natural fructose is absorbed later during the digestive process -Does fruit sugar cause a spike in glucose? Berries improve blood sugar5) and decrease the insulin spike from other sugary foods, such as bread.6) Bananas7) and mangoes have also been shown to improve blood sugars. 8) 5)Törrönen, Riitta, et al. Most Americans consumes more than 3 times the amount of fructose compared to 100 years ago, which causes a series of chronic disease.9) The Problem With Fructose? 9)Neilson, Eric G. "The fructose nation." (2007): 2619-2621

Weight Gain Due To Fruit Consumption A 2016 study, published in the journal Nutrients suggests fruit can actually reduce the risk of obesity.10) A study from 2011, RCT compared two diets: a low fructose diet from both added sugars and fruit (group A) and one that consisted of fresh fruit only (B). Weight loss was higher in group B (4.19 kg) than in group A (2.83 kg). Reduction of calories and added natural fructose intake may play a major role in preventing obesity and diabetes. 10)Sharma, Satya P., et al. "Paradoxical effects of fruit on obesity." Is Eating Too Much Fruit Harmful To Our Health? According to a South African study, in which participants had 20 servings of fruit/ day, plus 40% of their calories from nuts, there were no adverse effects for body weight, blood pressure, insulin and lipid levels, at least for the duration of the study, which was 6 months. 12 Another study from 2001 reported similar results. 3 different diets were compared: -high-vegetable, fruit, and nut (very-high-fiber) versus (A) -starch-based containing cereals and legumes (early agricultural diet) versus (B) -low-fat (contemporary therapeutic diet) (C) They also recorded a considerable drop in LDL.13 12) Meyer, B. Can Diabetics Eat Fresh Fruit? Fruit is beneficial for diabetics according to a Danish study from 2013. It was investigated whether reduced fruit intake had an effect on their HbA1c, bodyweight and waist circumference. Two groups: one group was told to eat at least two pieces of fruit a day, and the other group was told to eat more than two pieces a day. The group who reduced their fruit consumption didn’t see any effect on the control of their diabetes or weight. The researchers concluded that patients with type 2 diabetes should not reduce their fruit intake.14) 14) Christensen, Allan S., et al. "Effect of fruit restriction on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes–a randomized trial." Nutrition journal 12.1 (2013): 1-6.

Conclusion According to a 2009 study published in the Medscape Journal of Medicine, fewer than 1 in 10 Americans meet the minimum daily fruit recommendation, which is 2 cups of fruit per day. Increasing America's fruit consumption is an important public health strategy for weight management and reduction of risk for chronic disease. 15) 15) Kimmons, Joel, et al. "Fruit and vegetable intake among adolescents and adults in the United States: percentage meeting individualized recommendations." The Medscape Journal of Medicine 11.1 (2009): 26.
