About This Presentation

Description : Please check this comprehensive presentation on Gynecological Cancer Screening and Prevention: Ovarian Cancer. This informative guide is designed to increase awareness about ovarian cancer, one of the most challenging gynecological cancers to detect early. The presentation covers essential topics such as the types of ovarian cancer, risk factors including BRCA mutations, common symptoms, and current screening methods like transvaginal ultrasound and CA-125 blood tests.
Learn about genetic testing options for high-risk individuals, as well as prevention strategies including the role of oral contraceptives and preventive surgeries like prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy. We also discuss the latest advancements in research, including targeted therapies like PARP inhibitors and emerging biomarkers for early detection.
By understanding these key elements, healthcare professionals, patients, and concerned individuals can take proactive steps in recognizing and managing ovarian cancer. Our aim is to empower you with knowledge to support early detection and prevention, potentially improving outcomes for those at risk.
Dive into this presentation to gain insight into ovarian cancer’s impact, the importance of awareness, and the strides being made in research and treatment. Join us in spreading knowledge to promote better health for women everywhere.

Introduction to Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumor arising from the ovarian tissue. Known as the "silent killer" due to vague symptoms and often late diagnosis. Accounts for about 2.5% of cancers in women but has a high mortality rate. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Key Statistics for Ovarian Cancer. Retrieved from https://www.cancer.org
Slide 4-

Types of Ovarian Cancer Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: The most common type, originating from the outer surface of the ovary. Germ Cell Tumors: Arise from the cells that produce eggs. Stromal Tumors: Develop from connective tissue cells within the ovary. Reference: National Cancer Institute. (2020). Ovarian Cancer Treatment (PDQ®)–Patient Version. Retrieved from https://www.cancer.gov

Risk Factors for Ovarian Cancer Genetic Mutations: BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations significantly increase risk. Family History: Family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer. Age: Most cases occur in women over 50. Reproductive History: No full-term pregnancies, infertility, or late menopause may increase risk. Lifestyle Factors: Obesity and use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network. (2021). Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Breast, Ovarian, and Pancreatic. Retrieved from https://www.nccn.org

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer Bloating or swelling in the abdomen. Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain. Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly. Urinary urgency or frequency. These symptoms are often subtle and mistaken for other common conditions. Reference: Goff BA, et al. (2004). Frequency of symptoms of ovarian cancer in women presenting to primary care clinics. JAMA, 291(22), 2705-2712.

Screening for Ovarian Cancer Currently, no reliable screening test for early detection in asymptomatic women. Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS): Can detect masses on the ovaries but cannot determine if they are cancerous. CA-125 Blood Test: Measures a protein that can be elevated in ovarian cancer, but has limitations due to non-specificity. Screening is often reserved for high-risk individuals due to lack of effectiveness in the general population. Reference: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. (2018). Screening for Ovarian Cancer: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement. JAMA, 319(6), 588–594.
Slide 8-

Genetic Testing and Risk Assessment BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutations: Genetic testing recommended for those with a family history of ovarian or breast cancer. Lynch Syndrome: Increases risk for several cancers, including ovarian. Genetic counseling advised before testing to understand implications. Reference: National Cancer Institute. (2021). Genetics of Breast and Gynecologic Cancers (PDQ®)–Health Professional Version. Retrieved from https://www.cancer.gov
Slide 9-

Prevention Strategies for Ovarian Cancer Oral Contraceptives: Long-term use reduces the risk of ovarian cancer. Surgical Options: Tubal Ligation: May lower the risk. Prophylactic Salpingo-Oophorectomy: Removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes for high-risk individuals. Lifestyle Changes: Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when possible. Reference: Havrilesky LJ, et al. (2013). Oral contraceptive use for the primary prevention of ovarian cancer. Obstetrics and Gynecology, 122(1), 139-147.
Slide 10-

Early Detection and the Importance of Awareness Educating women on recognizing early symptoms is crucial for early detection. Importance of routine pelvic exams, especially for high-risk individuals. Awareness campaigns and patient education can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes. Reference: American Cancer Society. (2021). Ovarian Cancer Early Detection, Diagnosis, and Staging. Retrieved from https://www.cancer.org
Slide 11-

New Research and Advances Biomarker Research: Exploring other markers beyond CA-125 for more specific and sensitive detection. PARP Inhibitors: Targeted therapy for BRCA-mutated ovarian cancer. Immunotherapy: Potential to harness the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells. Reference: Matulonis UA, et al. (2016). PARP inhibitors in ovarian cancer: Evidence, experience, and clinical potential. Annals of Oncology, 27(Suppl 1), i7–i17.
