Genetic drift is the random fluctuation of allele frequencies in a population due to chance events, such as the death of individuals or the migration of individuals into or out of the population. Genetic drift is more likely to occur in small populations and can lead to the fixation of alleles that are neither beneficial nor harmful.

Together, these processes contribute to the genetic variation that exists within and between populations. This variation can have important consequences for the health and fitness of individuals and populations, as well as for their ability to adapt to changing environments.
