About This Presentation

Description : This presentation provides an in-depth exploration of female reproductive anatomy and physiology, covering the key organs and their functions. The female reproductive system consists of both external and internal structures that work together to support reproduction, hormone regulation, and pregnancy. Key topics include the ovaries, which produce eggs and secrete hormones, the fallopian tubes, where fertilization typically occurs, and the uterus, which supports a developing fetus during pregnancy. You’ll also learn about the cervix and vagina, vital for childbirth, menstruation, and sexual function. In addition, this presentation highlights the menstrual cycle, detailing the phases of the cycle—follicular, ovulation, luteal, and menstruation—along with the hormonal changes that regulate it. Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and the feedback mechanisms between the hypothalamus,

Overview of the Female Reproductive System The female reproductive system includes both external and internal organs. Its primary function is reproduction, hormone production, and maintaining pregnancy. The major organs include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina. Reference: Moore, K.L., Dalley, A.F., & Agur, A.M.R. (2017). Clinically Oriented Anatomy (8th ed.). Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
Slide 4-

External Genitalia (Vulva) Vulva: The collective name for the external female genital organs. Labia Majora: Outer folds of skin, protecting the internal structures. Labia Minora: Inner folds of skin, surrounding the vaginal opening. Clitoris: A highly sensitive organ involved in sexual arousal. Vaginal Opening: The entrance to the vagina. Urethral Opening: The opening for urine excretion. Reference: Gray, H. (2018). Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice (41st ed.). Elsevier.
Slide 5-

Ovaries Ovaries: Almond-shaped organs located on either side of the uterus. Function: Produce eggs (ova) and secrete sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone). Ovulation: The process where a mature egg is released from an ovary each menstrual cycle. Hormonal regulation is controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Reference: Sadler, T.W. (2019). Langman's Medical Embryology (14th ed.). Wolters Kluwer.
Slide 6-

Fallopian Tubes Fallopian Tubes: Narrow tubes that transport the egg from the ovaries to the uterus. Fimbriae: Finger-like projections that help capture the egg after ovulation. Fertilization Site: Most commonly occurs in the ampulla, the widest section of the tube. Reference: Cunningham, F.G., et al. (2020). Williams Obstetrics (26th ed.). McGraw-Hill Education.
Slide 7-

Uterus Uterus: A pear-shaped, muscular organ located in the pelvis. Function: Hosts and nourishes the fertilized egg until birth. Layers of the Uterus: Endometrium: The inner lining that thickens during the menstrual cycle and sheds if pregnancy does not occur. Myometrium: The middle muscular layer responsible for uterine contractions. Perimetrium: The outer protective layer. Reference: Baggish, M.S., Karram, M.M. (2021). Atlas of Pelvic Anatomy and Gynecologic Surgery (5th ed.). Elsevier.
Slide 8-

Cervix Cervix: The lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Function: Produces cervical mucus to aid or prevent sperm passage. Dilates during labor to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal. Plays a key role in fertility and pregnancy maintenance. Reference: Cunningham, F.G., et al. (2020). Williams Obstetrics (26th ed.). McGraw-Hill Education.
Slide 9-

Vagina Vagina: A muscular, elastic canal that connects the external genitalia to the uterus. Functions: Acts as a passage for menstrual flow. Serves as the birth canal during delivery. Allows for sexual intercourse. Reference: Moore, K.L., Dalley, A.F., & Agur, A.M.R. (2017). Clinically Oriented Anatomy (8th ed.). Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
Slide 10-

Menstrual Cycle Physiology Follicular Phase: Days 1-14, dominated by estrogen, preparation for ovulation. Ovulation: Release of a mature egg around day 14. Luteal Phase: Days 15-28, dominated by progesterone, preparation for potential pregnancy. Menstruation: If fertilization does not occur, the endometrial lining sheds, resulting in a period. Reference: Guyton, A.C., Hall, J.E. (2020). Textbook of Medical Physiology (14th ed.). Elsevier.
Slide 11-

Hormonal Regulation Hypothalamus: Releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to stimulate the pituitary gland. Pituitary Gland: Secretes Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). FSH stimulates follicle growth in the ovaries. LH triggers ovulation. Ovarian Hormones: Estrogen: Prepares the endometrium for pregnancy. Progesterone: Maintains the uterine lining after ovulation. Reference: Ganong, W.F. (2019). Review of Medical Physiology (26th ed.). McGraw-Hill Education.
Slide 12-

Fertilization and Implantation Fertilization: Typically occurs in the ampulla of the fallopian tube. Implantation: The fertilized egg (zygote) travels to the uterus and embeds in the endometrial lining. The release of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) from the embryo signals the start of pregnancy. Reference: Sadler, T.W. (2019). Langman's Medical Embryology (14th ed.). Wolters Kluwer.

Key Takeaways
Slide 14-

The female reproductive system consists of complex anatomical structures working together to support reproductive functions. Hormonal regulation plays a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, fertility, and pregnancy. Understanding both anatomy and physiology is key to addressing gynecological health.
