Philippines' Mangrove Ecosystem: Status, Threats, and Conservation
Slide 2-

Introduction Philippine has a rich biodiversity, regarded as one of the 17 megabiodiversity countries. It ranks 5th globally in terms of the number of plant species Maintains 5% of the worlds flora Phil. holds at least 50% mangrove species of the world (primavera, 2004) Approx. 65 species (Kathiresan and Bingham 2001). The diversity of Mangroves is relatively high because of geographical location.

Top 15 most mangrove-rich countries (Long and Giri, 2011) Phil. forest is 24% of the total land area (DENR, 2003) and mangrove forest is 3% (FMB, 2007) Mangrove forest is defined as a type of forest on tidal mudflats along the sea coast. 2/3 of 20,000 has. of matured mangroves is found in Palawan. 80,000 has. of mangroves left in the country is declared as the wilderness and forest reserves in 1981. 40,000 has of pristine mangroves found in Palawan.

Mangrove Taxonomy in the Philippines Mangrove Biologist classify mangrove plants into two: True Mangroves - species that are limited to the mangrove habitat Mangrove Associate - mainly distributed in a terrestrial or aquatic habitat but also occur in the mangrove ecosystem.

Importance of Mangrove in the Philippines Mangroves can hold waves forces of 70-90% on average (Macintosh, 2010) a 6 y/o mangrove forest of 1.5 km width can reduce sea waves of 20 folds. 1m high waves in open sea 0.05m to the coast Serve as carbon stock. It absorbs C02 in the atmosphere and stored excess in the sediments.

Conservation and Rehabilitation Efforts: Failures and Future Directions Long-term survival is 10-20% Inappropriate species Inappropriate sites Lack of awareness Complexity of interactions Weak and inadequate manpower Lack of political will to enforce law Ecotourism may be a potential threats to the ecosystem

Conclusion and Perspective Mangroves are unique ecosystems which offer tremendous values and benefits. Philippine magroves are very much diverse but facing tremendous threats. Strengthening the information, education and communication program for the protection and conservation of mangrove areas. Successful projects always start with proper awareness Continuously engaged the local community in the management of the resources Ecotourism must be paired with sustainability development and holistic approach
