It ranks 5th globally in terms of the number of plant species Maintains 5% of the worlds flora Phil. holds at least 50% mangrove species of the world (primavera, 2004) Approx. 65 species (Kathiresan and Bingham 2001). The diversity of Mangroves is relatively high because of geographical location.

Top 15 most mangrove-rich countries (Long and Giri, 2011) Phil. forest is 24% of the total land area (DENR, 2003) and mangrove forest is 3% (FMB, 2007) Mangrove forest is defined as a type of forest on tidal mudflats along the sea coast. 2/3 of 20,000 has. of matured mangroves is found in Palawan. 80,000 has. of mangroves left in the country is declared as the wilderness and forest reserves in 1981. 40,000 has of pristine mangroves found in Palawan.
