Why is the Digestive System important? Digestion is important because our body needs nutrients from food and drink to work properly and stay healthy. Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water are nutrients. Our digestive system breaks nutrients into parts small enough for your body to absorb and use for energy, growth, and cell repair.

How the Digestive System helps to maintain homeostasis in the body The bacterial flora in the intestines are essential to homeostasis in the body. They not only break down food so the nutrients can be absorbed, they produce vitamins like biotin and vitamin K and guard against harmful bacteria that enter the system.

How the Digestive System is linked to other organ systems in the body The digestive system works very closely with the circulatory system to get the absorbed nutrients distributed through your body. The circulatory system also carries chemical signals from your endocrine system that control the speed of digestion.

Common Digestive Disorders Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) and Gastritis PUD is an open sore in the lining of the stomach or upper part of the small intestine. Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. These two conditions have similar symptoms, including stomach pain and nausea, and similar causes.

Common Digestive Disorders Stomach Flu An infection of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine. Common symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and cramps. Rotavirus and norovirus, which affect millions of people every year, are often the cause. Gastroenteritis often clears up on its own, but you lose fluids through diarrhea and vomiting.

Common Digestive Disorders Constipation Constipation is difficult or infrequent passage of stool. If you have bowel movements less than three times a week, you likely are constipated. A common cause of constipation is not getting enough fiber in your diet. The main symptom of constipation is straining to go. In most cases, increasing fiber, fluids, and exercise will solve this condition. Use laxatives only as a temporary solution.
