Complementary Modalities Can be defined as a varied group of therapies and practices applied along with conventional medicine to increase or attain relaxation, sustain, improve or even renew health, and develop mind and spirit harmony. Furthermore, it also intends to improve coping mechanisms, lessen stress, relieve pain, and develop a person’s well-being.

Alternative Modalities Composed of varied group of therapies and practices applied along with conventional medicine aiming to increase comfort or relaxation, sustain, improve or even renew health; and mind and spirit. Just like complementary modalities, it is used for the improvement of coping mechanisms, lessen stress, relieve pain, and develop a person’s well-being. Combination of complementary and alternative modalities with conventional medicine is called Integrative Care, which also includes multiple modalities in the overall patient-centered plan of care

Akapulco (Cassia Alata) Also known as “bayabas-bayabasan” “ringworm bush or shrub” or Acapulco is a herbal plant for treating the infections, insect bites, ringworms, scabies and itchiness. Used as herbal medicine and is a shrub that grows wild in the tropical climate of Philippines. Akapulko is widely used in the Philippines as herbal medicine. The akapulko leaves contain chrysophanic acid, a fungicide that is used to treat fungal infections, like ringworms, scabies and eczema.

Ampalaya (Momordica Charantia) Commonly known as “bitter melon” “bitter gourd” is proven to be effective in treating diabetes, haemorrhoids, coughs, burns and scalds and as of the moment is being examined for its anti-cancer contents.

Bawang (Allium Sativum) Well-known as garlic which is used to treat infection with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-hypertensive properties, and good to reduce cholesterol in the blood that helps control blood pressure.

Bayabas (Psidium Guajava) Known as guava, is used as antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, anti-oxidant, anti-allergy, antimicrobial, anti-plasmodial, anti-cough, anti-diabetes, and anti-genotoxic. Its leaves are used to disinfect wounds, and as mouth wash to treat tooth decay and gum infection.

Lagundi (Vitex Negundo) Known as a “Five-leave chase tree” and is used to treat coughs, colds, and fever. It can be utilized as a relief for asthma, pharyngitis, rheumatism, dyspepsia and diarrhea. It is one of the ten herbal medicines endorsed by the Philippine Department of Health as an effective herbal medicine with proven therapeutic value. Commonly known in the Ilocos region as dangla, lagundi has been clinically tested to be effective in the treatment of colds, flu, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pharyngitis. Studies have shown that Lagundi can prevent the body's production of leukotrienes, which are released during an asthma attack.

Niyog-Niyogan (Quisqualis Indica L.) Known as “Chinese Honey Suckle” which is used to eliminate intestinal worms most especially Ascaris and Trichina. The niyog-niyogan plant grows in haste during the rainy season, hence constant pruning is especially recommended during this time. It is advised to place this plant in spacious areas to avoid crowding with a temperature of at least 60°F with evenly moistened soil to produce flowers. Niyog-niyogan can thrive in almost all kinds of soil and can even tolerate moderate amount of drought in cold seasons.

Sambong (Blumea Balsamifera) Its English name is Blumea camphora or Ngai camphor that is used to treat kidney stones, wounds and cuts, rheumatism, diarrhea, spasms, colds and coughs and hypertension. Sambong is one herbal medicine (of ten) approved by the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) as an alternative medicine in treating particular disorders. This plant possesses a multitude of properties that make it worthy of the DOH approval. It functions as an astringent and as an expectorant, and has been found to be anti-diarrhea and anti-spasm.

Tsaang Gubat (Ehretia Microphylla Lam.) Known as “Wild Tea” and is taken in a form of tea to treat skin allergies like eczema, scabies, and itchiness wounds in child birth. It is also used as intestinal motility and as a mouth wash due to its high fluoride content.

Ulasimang Bato or Pansit-Pansitan (Paperomia Pellucida) Known as Paperomia in English, this medicinal plant is effective in treating arthritis and gout. Its leaves are eaten like a salad or can be taken as a tea. Pansit-pansitan plant can grow wild but also grown as ornamental foliage. Pansit-pansitan is characterized by its shiny heart shaped leaves about 4 cm in length, growing from an erect translucent green stalks.

Yerba Buena (Clinopodium Douglasii) Commonly known as Peppermint, this medicinal vine is used an analgesic to relieve body aches and pain. It is also good for coughs, colds and insect bites. Yerba buena translates as "good herb". The specific plant species regarded as yerba buena varies from region to region, depending on what grows wild in the surrounding landscape, or which species is customarily grown in local gardens. Perhaps the most common variation of this plant is spearmint (Mentha spicata).

ACUPUNCTURE Is a traditional Chinese medicine component that emerged in China which is based on the claim that all living beings have a vital energy, called “qi” that goes through twelve invisible energy lines called meridians on the body. Each meridian pertains to a different organ system. Disease begins when there is an imbalance in the flow of qi throughout a meridian. Acupuncture involves the use of very fine needles that penetrate the skin of the person.

VENTOSA Or “Coping Therapy in Western counties, with this form of alternative medicine, a local suction is created on the skin. Glass is placed on specific acupressure points at the patient’s back to create a vacuum which lifts the skin. It removes stagnation stagnant blood and lymph, which improves Qi (Chi or Ch’i) flow that treats respiratory diseases like common cold, pneumonia and bronchitis.

AYURVEDA This is a traditional medicine originated in India which is also called Ayurvedic Medicine. It focuses on re-building balance or equilibrium in the body through proper diet, healthy lifestyle, exercise, body cleansing and on the condition of the mind, body, and spirit.

HOMEOPATHY This medical practice believes that human body has the ability of self-healing. It considers symptoms of illness as usual responses of the body as it tries to recover health. Furthermore, it operates on the concept of “like cures like” hence, if certain content creates a symptom in a healthy person, it may cure the illnesses.

NATUROPATHY This medical practice upholds the profound principle that all healing is self-healing by the human body. It uses different natural treatments tailored to each patient’s needs. It has a big consideration with the diet, lifestyle, work, environment, and personal history of the patient when approaching health and illnesses.

Mind-Body Interventions This type employs several techniques made to enhance the mind’s potential to affect bodily function and symptoms. Today, some techniques that were considered alternative in the past have become widely accepted as mainstream like art therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, support group etc.

Biological-Based Therapies This complementary and alternative medicine makes us of substances found in nature like herbs, foods, and vitamins. It also includes diet, dietary supplements, and herbal products.

Manipulative and Body-Based Method This method is basically rooted on the manipulation and/or movement of one or more parts of the body. This includes: Acupressure Reflexology

Acupressure This method aims to restore health and balance to the body’s channels of energy to control two opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). It is believed that acupressure does not only treat the energy fields and body but also the mind, emotions, and spirit while other acupressure claim that they can transfer the viral energy (external qi) to another person.

Reflexology This is a method where the bodywork focuses specifically on the feet of the client. It subscribes the theory that there are “reflex” areas on the feet and hands that link to certain organs, glands, and other parts of the body.

Energy Therapies This method utilizes the use of energy fields. Energy therapies pertain to a collective term used to refer a variety of alternative and complementary treatments based on the use, modification or manipulation of energy fields. Many energy therapies accept the concept that matter and energy are not exclusive opposites, but matter is simply denser form of energy that is more easily perceived by the senses.
