About This Presentation

Description : Clinical Applications of Radiation Therapy: Precision Cancer Treatment
Radiation therapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment, offering a versatile approach to manage and treat various types of cancers. It is used for curative, adjuvant, and palliative purposes, making it indispensable in oncology. This presentation, “Clinical Applications of Radiation Therapy,” explores the diverse roles of radiation in cancer care, highlighting its precision, effectiveness, and innovative techniques.
Discover how radiation therapy is applied across different cancers, such as breast, prostate, lung, brain, and head and neck cancers. Techniques like Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), and brachytherapy provide targeted treatment while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Additionally, the presentation covers the critical role of radiation in symptom relief for advanced cancers, such as alleviating pain from bone metastases or relieving airway obstruction in lung cancer.
With advancements like proton therapy, adaptive radiation therapy, and FLASH radiotherapy, the field continues to evolve, offering hope for improved outcomes and reduced side effects. By understanding the clinical applications of radiation therapy, healthcare professionals can harness its full potential to provide personalized and effective cancer care.
Join us to learn how radiation therapy is shaping the future of oncology.

Clinical Applications of Radiation Therapy Transforming Cancer Care with Precision and Innovation Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

What is Radiation Therapy? Radiation therapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment, used in over 50% of cancer cases. Delivers high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues. Can be curative, palliative, or supportive. Speaker Notes: Highlight the versatility of radiation therapy and its importance in cancer treatment, often used in combination with other modalities. Reference: Barton, M. B., et al. (2014). Estimating the optimal utilization rate for radiotherapy. Radiotherapy and Oncology.
Slide 3-

Types of Radiation Therapy External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT): Includes IMRT, 3D-CRT, SBRT, and SRS. Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation): High-dose-rate (HDR) and low-dose-rate (LDR). Proton Beam Therapy: High precision for sensitive sites. Palliative Radiation Therapy: Relieves symptoms in advanced cancers. Reference: DeVita, V. T., et al. (2019). Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology.
Slide 4-

Radiation Therapy in Breast Cancer Commonly used after lumpectomy or mastectomy to reduce recurrence. Techniques: Hypofractionated radiation therapy. Partial breast irradiation for early-stage cancers. Advances: IMRT for precise targeting, minimizing skin damage. Speaker Notes: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers treated with radiation therapy, especially post-surgery, to reduce the chances of recurrence. Reference: ASTRO Guidelines for Breast Cancer Radiation Therapy, 2020.
Slide 5-

Radiation Therapy in Prostate Cancer Commonly used for localized and advanced prostate cancer. Techniques: EBRT (IMRT, VMAT). Brachytherapy (HDR/LDR). SBRT for focal therapy. Benefits: Preserves surrounding structures like the bladder and rectum. Reference: Michalski, J. M., et al. (2021). Radiation therapy for prostate cancer: A systematic review. International Journal of Radiation Oncology.
Slide 6-

Radiation Therapy in Head and Neck Cancers Often used as primary or adjuvant therapy. Techniques: IMRT to spare salivary glands and reduce xerostomia. SRS for small, hard-to-reach tumors. Common cancers treated: Oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, and laryngeal cancers. Speaker Notes: Radiation therapy plays a central role in treating head and neck cancers due to its precision and ability to preserve organ function. Reference: Bhide, S. A., et al. (2021). Role of IMRT in head and neck cancers. Clinical Oncology.
Slide 7-

Radiation Therapy in Brain Tumors Key tool for both primary and metastatic brain tumors. Techniques: Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for precise, high-dose delivery. Whole Brain Radiation Therapy (WBRT) for multiple metastases. Example: Gamma Knife for glioblastoma and brain metastases. Reference: Brown, P. D., et al. (2018). Radiotherapy for brain metastases: A systematic review. Lancet Oncology.
Slide 8-

Radiation Therapy in Lung Cancer Used for early-stage, locally advanced, or metastatic disease. Techniques: SBRT for early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced NSCLC. Palliative radiation for symptom relief (e.g., airway obstruction). Speaker Notes: SBRT is particularly effective for patients who are not surgical candidates due to comorbidities. Reference: Bradley, J. D., et al. (2020). Radiotherapy for lung cancer. Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
Slide 9-

Radiation for Symptom Relief Used in advanced cancers to alleviate pain and improve quality of life. Common indications: Bone metastases (pain relief). Spinal cord compression. Brain metastases causing neurological symptoms. Benefits: Rapid symptom relief with minimal side effects. Reference: Lutz, S., et al. (2017). Palliative radiotherapy: Indications and outcomes. International Journal of Radiation Oncology.

Benefits of Radiation Therapy High precision reduces damage to healthy tissues. Effective for a wide range of cancers and stages. Non-invasive and can be delivered in outpatient settings. Versatility: Curative, adjuvant, and palliative roles. Speaker Notes: Radiation therapy offers unparalleled precision and adaptability, making it indispensable in cancer care. Reference: DeVita, V. T., et al. (2019). Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology.
Slide 11-

Future Directions in Radiation Therapy FLASH radiation therapy for reducing toxicity. Integration with immunotherapy for synergistic effects. AI-driven treatment planning for enhanced precision. Expanding access to radiation therapy in underserved regions. Reference: Bourhis, J., et al. (2019). Clinical translation of FLASH radiotherapy. Radiotherapy and Oncology.
