Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Cataract and Implant Surgery” by Dominic McHugh, MD FRCS.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about cataract and implant surgery.

Cataract surgery is a procedure used to remove the natural lens of the eye when it becomes cloudy due to a cataract, which can cause blurry or dim vision, and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to restore clear vision. The surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

During cataract surgery, a small incision is made in the cornea, and the cloudy lens is broken up into small pieces using ultrasound energy (phacoemulsification) and removed. The IOL is then inserted into the same location where the natural lens was, and the incision is closed with tiny stitches or self-sealing incisions that do not require stitches.

Implant surgery, on the other hand, refers to the surgical placement of an artificial device, such as a joint or a pacemaker, into the body to replace or support a damaged or dysfunctional body part. In the context of eye surgery, implant surgery may involve the insertion of an artificial lens to correct vision problems other than cataracts, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

In summary, cataract surgery is a type of implant surgery that involves the removal of a cloudy natural lens and the insertion of an artificial intraocular lens, while implant surgery generally refers to the surgical placement of an artificial device to replace or support a damaged or dysfunctional body part.

Choice of IOL Insertion through small incision High biomcompatilbility Allows good retinal view Stable centration Low PCO (posterior capsular opacification) rate

IOL choiceWhy foldable/injectable?Minimise incision size to reduce healing time and astigmatism PMMA(rigid) : Non-foldable+large incision Acrylic: Injectable through 2.2-3.2 mm currently.
