Blood & Blood Circulation By Khushbu Shrivastava Gupta Editor, MedicPresents Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Biotechnology - Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)
Slide 2-

Circulation Overview Transports Essential Substances Around Your Body Nutrients Oxygen Wastes Consists of Tissues & Organs Heart Blood Vessels Blood
Slide 3-

Circulation Overview Two Main Pathways “Loops” Pulmonary Circulation Blood Traveling from the Heart to the Lungs & Back to the Heart Systemic Circulation Blood Traveling from the Heart to the Body & Back to the Heart
Slide 4-

Gas Exchange In Lungs Inhale Air Oxygen Absorbed Into Blood Blood Gives Up Carbon Dioxide In Body Blood Gives Up Oxygen to Cells Cells Give Up Carbon Dioxide Wastes to Blood
Slide 5-

Blood Components Mixture of Liquid Plasma, Cells, & Cell Fragments
Slide 6-

Red Blood Cells Carry Oxygen Contains Hemoglobin (protein) Large Surface Area (Erythrocytes) 99 % Blood Cells
Slide 7-

White Blood Cells (Leukocytes) 5 – 10 thousand / mm3 blood Fight Infections / Immunity Includes Macrophages T- Cells, & B - Cells
Slide 8-

Platelets Cell Fragments Repair Damaged Blood Vessels Responsible for Blood Clotting
Slide 9-

Plasma Mixture of Water With Dissolved Substances Carries Many Things Liquid Portion of Blood Hormones Amino Acids Lipids Glucose Vitamins & Minerals Carbon Dioxide Helps Distribute Body Heat
Slide 10-

Blood Vessels Arteries Capillaries Veins (Arterioles) (Venules)
Slide 11-

Comparing Arteries & Veins Carry Blood Away From Heart Thick Elastic Walls Expand for Surge of Blood Can Withstand High Blood Pressure Carry Blood To Heart Thinner Walls & Lower Blood Pressure Valves Prevent Backflow of Blood
Slide 12-

Aorta Pulmonary Artery Cornary Artery Carotid Artery Renal Artery Heptatic-Portal Artery Pulmonary Vein Coronary Vein Heptatic-Portal Vein Renal Vein Jugular Vein Inferior & Superior Vena Cavae Body Lungs Heart S.I. & Liver Kidneys Head & Neck Blood Vessels
Slide 13-

Capillaries Connect Arteries to Veins Very Thin Walls Allows Substances to Enter & Leave the Blood Stream Very Small
Slide 14-

Aorta Pulmonary Arteries Left Atrium Bicuspid Valve Left Ventricle Superior Vena Cava Right Atrium Tricuspid Valve Right Ventricle Septum Aortic Valve Pulmonary Valve Pulmonary Veins
Slide 15-

Label the Following Structures Right ventricle Left ventricle Right atrium Left atrium Pulmonary arteries Pulmonary veins Aorta Superior vena cava Inferior vena cava Semi-lunar valves Bicuspid valve Tricuspid valve Cardiac muscle Pericardium Septum Color in oxygenated blood red & de-oxygenated blood blue Draw arrows showing blood flow Through the heart & adjacent Blood vessels Indicate the location of the lungs
