PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF RESPIRATORY FAILURE Respiratory failure (RF) is inability of the respiratory system to maintain a normal state of gas exchange from the atmosphere to the cells as required by the body The role of the respiratory system is to maintain normal arterial blood PO2, PCO2, and pH
Slide 5-

Definition: RF is present if: (1) Arterial PO2 (PaO2) is < 60 mm Hg, or (2) Arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) is > 45 mm Hg, except when the elevation in PCO2 is compensation for metabolic acidosis A PaO2 < 60 mm Hg, indicating hypoxemic respiratory failure, is valid during room air breathing [FIO2] = 0.21, but hypoxemia while breathing supplemental oxygen also indicates respiratory failure
Slide 6-

Classification: Disorders that affect the lungs including: - airways, - alveolar spaces - interstitium - pulmonary circulation Disorders that affect primarily the non-lung components of the respiratory system
