Hearing Loss Basics (Myths and Facts)
Slide 4-

4 Facts about Hearing Loss 48 million Americans currently have a hearing loss More likely than you think to know someone with a hearing loss Among seniors, hearing loss is third most prevalent (but treatable) disabling condition Common aging process result Baby boomers start reaching retirement age in 2010 48 million with hearing loss  62 million by 2030 Population with hearing loss will only grow Current statistics on hearing aid use 95% with hearing loss can benefit from hearing aids 22% currently use them For many it is a hidden disability

Myths and Misunderstanding about Hearing Loss All People with Hearing Loss Experience the Same Problems One Solution Applies to All Settings Hearing Aid Fixes Everything Lip reading Can Replace Hearing Hearing Loss Only Applies to Volume Let’s Discuss These Myths In Detail
Slide 6-

Myth: All People with Hearing Loss Experience the Same Problems Fact: Hearing Loss is About Loudness and Frequency

10 Audiogram is Only a Partial Story Audiogram Shows: Frequencies heard, Hard of Hearing people have lost the ability to hear either high or low frequencies or both. Other Factors Beyond the Audiogram: Listening skills Coping strategies Technology Sleep the night before Tinnitus?
Slide 11-

Myth: You Could Hear if You Tried “But you had no problem last time”
Slide 12-

12 Fact: Hearing Ability Varies People with no hearing loss do not experience this variation
Slide 13-

Myth: Hearing Aids Fix Everything “Are you wearing your hearing aid?”
Slide 14-

14 Fact: Hearing Aid is Partial Solution Hearing aids do not “fix” hearing loss not like glasses external amplifier has to go through “bad” ear Problems with hearing aids amplify background noise can have interference from equipment A Hearing Aid helps, but it is not total solution
Slide 15-

Myth: Volume is the Only Problem “We can turn up the volume.” “Just turn up your hearing aid.” “How about if you just sit closer?”
Slide 16-

16 Fact: Louder Not Necessarily Clearer
Slide 17-

17 Ambiguity is the Real Problem A few numbers that sound the same 15, 16, 50, 60 “Fifteen, that is, one-five.” Letters sound the same B, C, D, E, G, P, T, V, Z A person with hearing loss, may only get part of what is being said. You might need to say something like: “C as in Cat” or use a different word
Slide 18-

18 Effect of Noise on Speech Do You See Me? Do You See Me? Do You See Me? Do You See Me? No noise Low Noise Moderate Noise Too Much Noise From Rebecca Morris “On the Job with Hearing Loss”. Morgan James, 2007, pg. 48 Courtesy of Samual R. Atcherson, Ph.D.

19 Communication Communication is not about what is said how it is said Communication is About What is Understood
Slide 20-

When Hearing Aids aren’t enough, Cochlear Implants may be an option Who should get a cochlear implant? The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association says the device is best for adults who have: Severe to profound hearing loss in both ears Hearing loss after they’ve already learned speech and language Limited help from hearing aids No medical problems that would make surgery risky A strong desire to hear better A good understanding of what the device will -- and won’t -- do for them What is the age limit for getting a cochlear implant? According to AARP Health 2016 article, chronological age is -not the issue, it’s a person’s overall health. In other words, it’s not so much how many years you’ve lived as how well your body has held up. In April 2014, Mollie Smith, 99, became the oldest cochlear implant recipient in Europe. So if your doctor recommends an implant, go for it, no matter what your age. “When elderly patients tell me they are too old for a CI,” Dr. Rubinstein said, “I tell them age is not important unless they are a cheese.” 20
Slide 21-

21 Using Assistive Listening Devices? Hearing aids alone don’t work well in these situations: Listening to someone at a distance Listening in a noisy environment Listening in a room with reverberation (echoing) Assistive Listening Devices Can Help!
Slide 22-

22 Two Major Types of Assistive Listening Devices 1. Hard-Wired Devices or Systems carry the sound signal through an electrical wire Most common hard-wired device is hand-held amplification device. These devices contain a microphone, amplifier, and wire. Pocket Talker Sound Wizard Personal Listener
Slide 23-

23 Two Major Types of Assistive Listening Devices (continued) 2. Wireless Devices or Systems carry the sound signal without an electrical wire use a transmitter and receiver (similar to baby crib monitors or radio stations) Wireless devices contain a transmitter and receiver and carry the signal in different ways: FM systems (radio waves) Infrared (light waves) Induction Loop (magnetic energy)
Slide 24-

24 Using an FM System: Making Conversation Easier Conversations Restaurant Car Bus Bingo Church Tours Use FM radio signals Microphone near speaker Wireless receiver (earpiece or loop)
Slide 25-

25 Using an Infrared System: Watching TV or Attending a Play TV: Use infrared light to transmit the TV signal. The transmitter connects to TV. Use the receiver to hear the TV sound directly in your ears. Theater: Use infrared light to transmit house sound to patrons with special receivers using headset or neckloop. The theater must have an infrared transmitter set up. headphones Transmitter Receiver Transmitter Receiver
Slide 26-

26 Magnetic Connection to Hearing Aid Using Neckloop or Hearing Loop system with T-coils A Neckloop or Hearing Loop System sends sound signal to a hearing aid when it is switched to telecoil setting; the hearing aid can then be adjusted to amplify and customize the sound. If you do not have a t-coil hearing aid, you can wear earbuds or headphones with receiver!
Slide 27-

Slide 28-

28 Television Listeners Use FM or IR to transmit the TV signal. The transmitter connects to TV. Use the receiver (IR receiver, FM receiver, or FM boot) to hear the TV sound directly in your ears. Ear bud or loop Allows the entire family to enjoy TV at their own listening volume
Slide 29-

29 Captioning TV Captioning: Embedded in most TVs – switch on to see words Movie Captioning: Open captioned – everyone can see (like foreign subtitles) Closed captioned – need a special screen to see the words (Rear Window, Captiview or Glasses) Plays: LED Display Real-Time Captioning: Computer Aided Real Time (CART): words displayed at event (screen or laptop) CART Writer = stenographer with special training in providing hearing access In person CART writers and remote CART providers CPrint = summary is typed (note taking used for classes) Captel Telephone (later slide) Relay Conference Captioning (later slide)

Sign Language Interpreters Video Remote Interpreting (VRI):VRI technology remotely provide professional and confidential sign language interpreting. VRI is particularly beneficial when there is an emergency that cannot wait for an interpreter to travel to be on-site or in areas where the nearest certified interpreter is hours away. 32 Video Relay Service (VRS) is a form of Telecommunications Relay Service that enables people who use American Sign Language to communicate with voice telephone users through video equipment, rather than through typed text. Video equipment links the VRS user with a TRS operator – called a communications assistant, or CA – so that the VRS user and the CA can see and communicate with each other in signed conversation. Contact the CDHH Interpreter/CART Referral Service: The statewide work unit of the RICDHH Interpreter/CART Services, established under RI G.L., 23-1.8 which receives requests for Interpreters and CART.
