What Are Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)? STIs are infections transmitted through sexual contact. Common STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, herpes, HIV, and syphilis. STIs can affect overall sexual and reproductive health. Speaker Notes: STIs are a major public health concern worldwide, with millions of new cases every year. This presentation will provide an overview of common STIs, their prevention, and treatment options. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2021). Common Types of Sexually Transmitted Infections Bacterial STIs: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis Viral STIs: Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), HIV/AIDS Parasitic STIs: Trichomoniasis Speaker Notes: STIs are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Each type has different characteristics and requires different treatment approaches. Understanding the types helps in diagnosis and treatment. Reference: World Health Organization. (2021). How Are STIs Transmitted? Sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal sex) Skin-to-skin contact (for some viral infections like HPV and herpes) Sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia Mother-to-child transmission during childbirth or breastfeeding Speaker Notes: STIs can be transmitted through various forms of sexual activity and, in some cases, through non-sexual means like needle sharing. Understanding transmission is crucial for prevention. Reference: National Institutes of Health. (2020). Sexually Transmitted Infections: Risk and Prevention. Retrieved from https://www.nih.gov

Recognizing Symptoms of STIs Common symptoms: Unusual discharge, pain during urination, sores, itching, and rashes. Many STIs are asymptomatic, especially in the early stages. Importance of regular testing even without symptoms. Speaker Notes: Many STIs do not cause symptoms initially, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Routine screening is essential for sexually active individuals. Reference: Mayo Clinic. (2021). Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) - Symptoms and Causes. Retrieved from https://www.mayoclinic.org
Slide 7-

How Are STIs Diagnosed? Physical examination and patient history. Laboratory tests (urine tests, blood tests, swabs). Self-sampling kits available for some STIs. Speaker Notes: Diagnosis of STIs involves a combination of patient history, physical exams, and lab tests. Accurate diagnosis ensures proper treatment and management. Treatment Options for STIs Bacterial STIs: Treated with antibiotics (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis). Viral STIs: Managed but not cured; antiviral medications (e.g., HSV, HIV). Parasitic STIs: Treated with antiparasitic medications (e.g., trichomoniasis). Speaker Notes: Treatment depends on the type of infection. Bacterial infections are generally curable with antibiotics, while viral infections can only be managed. Reference: National Health Service. (2021). Treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Retrieved from https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/sexually-transmitted-infections-stis/

How to Prevent STIs? Consistent and correct use of condoms. Regular STI testing for sexually active individuals. HPV vaccination for prevention of HPV-related infections. Limit number of sexual partners and practice monogamy. Speaker Notes: Preventing STIs requires a proactive approach, including regular testing, vaccination, and safe sex practices. Education on prevention is key to reducing STI rates. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2021). Prevention of STDs. Retrieved from https://www.cdc.gov/std/prevention/default.htm
