Description : Sexual and Reproductive Health: Fertility and Infertility
This presentation, "Sexual and Reproductive Health: Fertility and Infertility," provides an in-depth look at the complex topic of fertility and the challenges couples may face with infertility. Covering both female and male factors, this resource explores the common causes, including hormonal imbalances, ovulatory disorders, tubal blockages, and lifestyle factors that can impact fertility.
Through a structured series of slides, you’ll gain insights into diagnostic methods such as hormone testing, semen analysis, imaging, and genetic testing. We also highlight current treatment options, including medications, surgical interventions, and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). Additionally, the presentation emphasizes the role of lifestyle modifications in supporting fertility, including dietary changes, exercise, and stress management.
Understanding the psychosocial impact of infertility is also key. Couples often experience emotional stress, social stigma, and financial strain, and the presentation covers supportive counseling and coping strategies. This resource is ideal for healthcare professionals, students, and individuals seeking to understand fertility and infertility from both a medical and holistic perspective.

Introduction to Fertility and Infertility Fertility is the natural ability to conceive a child. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. Affects approximately 10-15% of couples worldwide. Speaker Notes: Fertility is a complex process involving both male and female reproductive systems. Infertility can be due to factors in either partner or both, and it is a common issue affecting millions of couples globally. Reference: Zegers-Hochschild, F., et al. (2009). The international glossary on infertility and fertility care. Human Reproduction, 24(11), 2683-2687.

Causes of Infertility - Female Factors Ovulatory Disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation (e.g., PCOS). Tubal Blockages: Often due to infections, endometriosis, or previous surgeries. Uterine Abnormalities: Fibroids, polyps, or scarring. Age-Related Decline: Decrease in egg quality and quantity over time. Speaker Notes: Female infertility can be caused by several issues, primarily involving ovulation, fallopian tubes, or the uterus. Age is also a significant factor as fertility declines with age. Reference: Practice Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. (2008). Optimal evaluation of the infertile female. Fertility and Sterility, 90(5), S201-S208.

Causes of Infertility - Male Factors Sperm Production Disorders: Low sperm count, poor motility, abnormal morphology. Hormonal Imbalances: Affecting testosterone or other reproductive hormones. Varicocele: Enlarged veins in the scrotum impacting sperm quality. Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, alcohol, obesity, and exposure to toxins. Speaker Notes: Male infertility can often be traced to issues with sperm production or function. Lifestyle factors also play a crucial role in male fertility. Reference: Agarwal, A., et al. (2015). A unique view on male infertility around the globe. Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, 13(1), 37.

Diagnosing Infertility in Women Hormone Testing: Evaluates levels of FSH, LH, AMH, and estrogen. Ovulation Tracking: Blood tests, ultrasound, and basal body temperature. Hysterosalpingography (HSG): X-ray test to check fallopian tube patency. Ultrasound and Laparoscopy: Detects uterine and ovarian abnormalities. Speaker Notes: Diagnosing infertility in women often involves hormonal testing, imaging, and ovulation tracking to identify the cause. Reference: Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. (2008). The investigation and management of the infertile couple. Green-top Guideline No. 3.

Diagnosing Infertility in Men Semen Analysis: Measures sperm count, motility, and morphology. Hormonal Testing: Evaluates levels of testosterone, LH, and FSH. Genetic Testing: Detects chromosomal abnormalities linked to infertility. Physical Exam: Checks for varicocele or other physical issues. Speaker Notes: Semen analysis is usually the first step in evaluating male fertility, alongside hormonal and genetic tests when necessary. Reference: Cooper, T. G., et al. (2010). World Health Organization reference values for human semen characteristics. Human Reproduction Update, 16(3), 231-245.

Treatment Options for Infertility Medications: Clomiphene citrate, letrozole, and gonadotropins to stimulate ovulation. Surgical Procedures: To correct uterine or tubal issues. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Insertion of sperm directly into the uterus. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Fertilization of eggs outside the body and implantation. Speaker Notes: Infertility treatment depends on the underlying cause, and can range from medications to assisted reproductive techniques like IVF. Reference: American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. (2018). Management of Infertility. ACOG Practice Bulletin No. 194.

Lifestyle Modifications to Enhance Fertility Diet and Nutrition: Healthy diet, adequate folic acid, antioxidants. Exercise: Moderate physical activity. Stress Management: Meditation, counseling, and relaxation techniques. Avoiding Toxins: Reduce exposure to smoking, alcohol, and environmental toxins. Speaker Notes: Making positive lifestyle changes can support fertility in both men and women, and may improve the chances of conception. Reference: Chavarro, J. E., et al. (2007). Diet and lifestyle in the prevention of ovulatory disorder infertility. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 110(5), 1050-1058.
Slide 10-

Psychosocial Impact of Infertility Emotional distress: Depression, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy. Social stigma and relationship strain. Financial burden of infertility treatments. Importance of counseling and support groups. Speaker Notes: Infertility can have a profound emotional and social impact, and addressing these psychosocial needs is essential for holistic care. Reference: Greil, A. L., et al. (2010). The psychological consequences of infertility. Social Science & Medicine, 71(4), 634-641.
Slide 11-

Advances in Fertility Treatments Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT): Screening embryos for genetic conditions. Fertility Preservation: Egg and sperm freezing for future use. In Vitro Maturation (IVM): Maturing eggs in the lab before fertilization. New IVF Techniques: Improved embryo selection and embryo transfer. Speaker Notes: Advances in fertility treatments offer new possibilities for couples struggling with infertility, allowing for more personalized and effective care. Reference: Chang, J., et al. (2009). Trends in assisted reproductive technology use. Fertility and Sterility, 91(4), 1179-1185.
